The 16th century split from the Roman Catholic Church, resulting in the Protestant religious movement, is explored on this nine-day tailored trip following the story of the main protagonist, Martin Luther. Guests will explore Erfurt, the town where Luther lived as a young man when he was a student and a monk, Wartburg where he lived in exile and incognito devoting himself to translating the New Testament into German, and Wittenburg where he nailed 95 Theses to the church door, among other Luther heritage attractions.

Day 2 - Frankfurt – Excursion Worms and Mainz
Today begin your discovery of the life of Martin Luther with a full day excursion to Worms and Mainz. It was here that private conferences were held to determine Luther's fate after he had published his 95 Theses in 1517. Martin Luther had challenged the entire Roman Catholic establishment by his refusal to recant the great doctrines of Protestantism. The Emperor presented the final draft of the Edict of Worms on 25 May 1521 declaring Luther an outlaw, banning his literature, and requiring his arrest. It was also in Worms that William Tyndale completed the printing of his English version of the New Testament in 1525 which he had begun in Cologne. After visiting St. Peter's Church and the symbolic Martin Luther Memorial near the town square travel to Mainz. View the Gutenberg Monument commemorating the German printing of the Bible before returning back to your hotel in Frankfurt.Buffet Breakfast
Day 3 - Frankfurt – Erfurt (2 Nights)
This morning travel to Erfurt, another city closely linked to Martin Luther. Erfurt is the capital of the German state Thuringia and is known as the Rome of Thuringia because of its many churches. Its medieval city center is one of the largest and best preserved in Germany. In his early years, Martin Luther attended the University of Erfurt which is one of the three oldest universities in Germany. After he had taken a vow to become a monk, he entered the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt and lived there as a monk for 6 years. In 1507, Luther was ordained a priest in Erfurt Cathedral. In total Martin Luther lived and worked in Erfurt from 1501 to 1511. The city also has connections with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Sebastian Bach, Napoleon Bonaparte, Tzar Alexander, and Goethe.Buffet Breakfast
Day 4 - Erfurt – Excursion to Eisenach and Wartburg Castle
Enjoy a relaxed day excursion to Eisenach - one of the major Luther destinations dominated by the impressive Wartburg Castle. Visit inside the castle which is one of the most important buildings in German history. See the room where Martin Luther spent eleven weeks translating the New Testament. Day 5 - Erfurt – Eisleben – Dresden
Stop today in the birthplace of Martin Luther en-route to Dresden. Martin Luther was the most famous citizen of Eisleben, a town founded more than a thousand years ago. He was born on November 10, 1483 and by a twist of fate he died in this same town on February 18, 1546 while on a visit for family business. Visit the museum which was Martin Luther's house and today is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. It contains a permanent exhibition on Luther's life and work, focusing on his early years in the town. Visit the Church of St. Andrew where Luther gave his last sermon and where his funeral service took place. Arrive later in Dresden - known as 'Florence on the Elbe'. Day 6 - Dresden – Leipzig – Dessau (2 nights)
Enjoy a scenic drive to visit the majestic city of Leipzig. Day 7 - Excursion to Wittenberg
Today is devoted to Wittenberg. Luther nailed his ninety-five Theses to the door of All Saints' Church in Wittenberg on 31 October 1517. He was intending to invite others to a scholarly discussion but in fact sparked off one of the most significant changes the Christian world has ever seen. Inside the church, visit the graves of Martin Luther and Phillip Melanchthon. You will also view Luther's house. The reformer lived here from 1508 and was joined by his wife Katharina in 1525. She gave him a gate as a present for his 57th birthday which you can still see today and which shows the Luther rose which is the coat of arms of the reformer. Travel today to the historic city of Berlin.
