Tour Itinerary

The 16th century split from the Roman Catholic Church, resulting in the Protestant religious movement, is explored on this nine-day tailored trip following the story of the main protagonist, Martin Luther. Guests will explore Erfurt, the town where Luther lived as a young man when he was a student and a monk, Wartburg where he lived in exile and incognito devoting himself to translating the New Testament into German, and Wittenburg where he nailed 95 Theses to the church door, among other Luther heritage attractions.

Day 1 - Arrive Frankfurt (2 Nights)
Welcome to Frankfurt. After check-in this afternoon, your Travel Director takes you on an orientation tour of the city's dynamic financial centre and medieval Römerplatz. Join your Travel Director and travel companions for a delicious dinner in a local restaurant - the perfect way to start your trip.Dinner with wine

Day 2 - Frankfurt – Excursion Worms and Mainz
Today begin your discovery of the life of Martin Luther with a full day excursion to Worms and Mainz. It was here that private conferences were held to determine Luther's fate after he had published his 95 Theses in 1517. Martin Luther had challenged the entire Roman Catholic establishment by his refusal to recant the great doctrines of Protestantism. The Emperor presented the final draft of the Edict of Worms on 25 May 1521 declaring Luther an outlaw, banning his literature, and requiring his arrest. It was also in Worms that William Tyndale completed the printing of his English version of the New Testament in 1525 which he had begun in Cologne. After visiting St. Peter's Church and the symbolic Martin Luther Memorial near the town square travel to Mainz. View the Gutenberg Monument commemorating the German printing of the Bible before returning back to your hotel in Frankfurt.Buffet Breakfast

Day 3 - Frankfurt – Erfurt (2 Nights)
This morning travel to Erfurt, another city closely linked to Martin Luther. Erfurt is the capital of the German state Thuringia and is known as the Rome of Thuringia because of its many churches. Its medieval city center is one of the largest and best preserved in Germany. In his early years, Martin Luther attended the University of Erfurt which is one of the three oldest universities in Germany. After he had taken a vow to become a monk, he entered the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt and lived there as a monk for 6 years. In 1507, Luther was ordained a priest in Erfurt Cathedral. In total Martin Luther lived and worked in Erfurt from 1501 to 1511. The city also has connections with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Sebastian Bach, Napoleon Bonaparte, Tzar Alexander, and Goethe.Buffet Breakfast

Day 4 - Erfurt – Excursion to Eisenach and Wartburg Castle
Enjoy a relaxed day excursion to Eisenach - one of the major Luther destinations dominated by the impressive Wartburg Castle. Visit inside the castle which is one of the most important buildings in German history. See the room where Martin Luther spent eleven weeks translating the New Testament. You will have free time to explore in this picturesque town and take in the scenery. Return later to your hotel in Erfurt for dinner.Buffet Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5 - Erfurt – Eisleben – Dresden
Stop today in the birthplace of Martin Luther en-route to Dresden. Martin Luther was the most famous citizen of Eisleben, a town founded more than a thousand years ago. He was born on November 10, 1483 and by a twist of fate he died in this same town on February 18, 1546 while on a visit for family business. Visit the museum which was Martin Luther's house and today is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. It contains a permanent exhibition on Luther's life and work, focusing on his early years in the town. Visit the Church of St. Andrew where Luther gave his last sermon and where his funeral service took place. Arrive later in Dresden - known as 'Florence on the Elbe'. See the highlights of this astonishing Baroque city including the Opera House and Zwinger Palace.Buffet Breakfast
Swissotel Am Schloss

Day 6 - Dresden – Leipzig – Dessau (2 nights)
Enjoy a scenic drive to visit the majestic city of Leipzig. First and foremost, Leipzig is the city of Johann Sebastian Bach, musical genius who worked as cantor at the Thomaskirche for more than 25 years. Visit this church where Luther preached and Johann Sebastian Bach performed and directed the famous St. Thomas Boys choir. Later travel to Dessau.Buffet Breakfast
NH Dessau/Radisson Blu Fürst Leopold

Day 7 - Excursion to Wittenberg
Today is devoted to Wittenberg. Luther nailed his ninety-five Theses to the door of All Saints' Church in Wittenberg on 31 October 1517. He was intending to invite others to a scholarly discussion but in fact sparked off one of the most significant changes the Christian world has ever seen. Inside the church, visit the graves of Martin Luther and Phillip Melanchthon. You will also view Luther's house. The reformer lived here from 1508 and was joined by his wife Katharina in 1525. She gave him a gate as a present for his 57th birthday which you can still see today and which shows the Luther rose which is the coat of arms of the reformer. Enjoy free time to explore the city before returning to your hotel.Buffet Breakfast, Dinner

Day 8 - Dessau – Berlin Sightseeing
Travel today to the historic city of Berlin. Marvel at the landmarks of the old East and West sections of the city during your sightseeing tour with your Local Specialist including The Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden Boulevard, Reichstag Building, Tiergarten and the shopping and entertainment district of Kurfürstendamm. Spend the rest of the day exploring this city on your own. Shop for souvenirs, walk through Potsdamer Platz or learn more about Berlin's secret past. This evening enjoy a Farewell Dinner with your travel companions.Buffet Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

The trip was about nature and history. It lacked any mention of art - at the least, architecture and sculpture. It would benefit if those topics were included.

By Maryellen D on Feb 05, 2017

The tour was spectacular. The Cooper Canyon was awesome and unbelievable. Our tour guide was well-experienced and knowledgeable. Our accommodations were the best. The local foods that we ate were very delicious.

By Dina B on Jan 28, 2017

Trafalgar is an excellent choice for traveling. I already did 2 European tours with them in 6 months and booked my third tour. They are professional and efficient. Traveling with Trafalgar saves time and money. The local experiences they provide make all the difference.

The tour was with AATKings/Trafalgar Tours. The Guide, Driver, Hotels, Meals, Tours were all excellent and I had a great time. Thanks!

By Ronnette B on Jan 07, 2017

The itinerary was absolutely within my expectations.

By Analisa J on Jan 06, 2017

Our travel consultant did an excellent job booking our trip. The flight, airport transfer, and the tour itself was far beyond our expectations.

By Dennis B on Jan 01, 2017

Everything that was stated came true but it was even better then what I expected.

By Sharon M on Dec 28, 2016

We loved this trip. We love using Trafalgar because the tour directors are great, the itinerary is well planned out, and they have experiences that are unique, like taking a ride on a horse-drawn wagon (the horse had jingle bells on) through a small town and stopping for pictures on a beautiful little bridge, and then the owner of the horses taking us to his home and providing us with a homemade lunch.

By Ben T on Dec 25, 2016

Everything was great in my trip to New Zealand's southern island, the scenery was certainly stunning! I had a good time, all the fellow travelers in the tour was very nice and friendly, and I have found some new friends there! New Zealand is a new country where air is very clean and people are honest and trustworthy welcoming tourists as well as foreigners with open arms. Next time I'd like to go back and see the Northern island of the country.

By Paul B on Dec 24, 2016

It's a trip worth taking, but not at all up to the descriptions provided by most travelers. So don't think your socks are going to get knocked off by the scenery seen from the train or the dizzying bridge heights. Maybe I'm jaded because I live in Wash. State and I've taken the Empire Builder (Amtrak) & the Rocky Mountaineer (Canada Rail). So, this trip had some "nice" scenery, and it was interesting to do some real switchbacks, but as for the train portion overall: "meh". Hard to get good camera shots if not on right side of train or unless you camped out (to the detriment of others) on the right side of the in-between sections of the train cars. The train condition was good, the restrooms were clean, and the food was OK. The accommodations on the trip were nice to very-nice, as was the food. You have to realize this is Mexico however -- if you're expecting USA quality throughout then you're going to be one of the complainers the rest of us have to put up with. The hotel on the rim of the canyon was especially nice, with incredible views. The tram ride (into the canyon) was also very scenic. Between the two, it made the trip very worthwhile. The Casas Grandes (Paquime) stop was also very interesting if you like archaeological stuff. Those two things (the canyon stay) & Paquime were kinda the only two things worth seeing on the trip. Not that the rest of it wasn't worth seeing at all -- it was. But those were really the only two stops of significance in my opinion. I'm glad I crossed this trip off my list, but I would not do it again nor recommend it except with the above caveats. This was my first trip with Trafalgar (I've done many other bus tours with other companies). I would recommend them, putting them on the same level as Globus.

By James W on Dec 23, 2016

Truly professional Tour Director and drivers made the tour memorable. Trafalgar always arrange first class hotel rooms.

By Linda T on Nov 25, 2016

The Trafalgar tour guide wasn\'t good as those we had in the past. The itinerary was a bit rushed, covering too great a distance in a short time.

By Randall B on Nov 22, 2016

I thought both Affordable Tours and Trafalgar did a great job. Would definitely travel with Trafalgar again and would definitely use Affordable Tours again.

By Catherine C on Nov 06, 2016

It was an awesome, organized, educational and a fun trip from Trafalgar. Folks were great. Thank you to our travel director who took care of the group\'s need and our driver for keeping us safe. It went beyond my expectation. Thank you!

By Carmen F on Oct 22, 2016

Just got back home from my 2016 Splendors of Italy vacations (10/22-11/03). The Travel Director was absolutely amazing, as well as our driver. They did everything to make our vacation an unforgettable experience. All local guides were excellent and very attentive. They took care of every detail so we just had to enjoy every second in Italy.
