Tour Itinerary

Explore Choquequirao away from the crowds, witness the mountain beauty of the Andes, marvel at Machu Picchu.

This shorter trek is perfect if you're looking for an adventure that's as challenging as it is rewarding. Explore the ruins of Choquequirao, the lost city that's even more remote than nearby Machu Picchu, but you'll see that too. Because of its difficult-to-reach location, the site sees relatively few visitors. This means you'll get to experience Incan history in near-solitude, surrounded by nothing but ancient architecture and spanning forests. Spectacular views of the Andes are all along the trek to Choquequirao, a journey filled with lush wilderness, breathtaking vistas, and a visit to Machu Picchu.

Day 1: Cusco
Arrive at any time.
Activity: The adventure begins today. Feel free to explore, but make sure you're back in time to meet the group. Your G Representative will review the details of your tour.
Accommodation: Cusco Plaza I (or similar)

Day 2: Cusco/Choquequirao Trek
Transfer to Cachora and embark on the hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao. Surrounded by breathtaking views of the Apurimac River and sweeping mountain scenery at every turn.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Embark on the first day of the trek and enjoy incredible views of Padreyoc mountain as the trail zig-zags downhill into the Apurimac River Canyon. On the descent into the canyon watch as the landscape becomes forested and humid, pass by fruit farms on the way to the camp for the night at Playa Rosalinas (1,500m/4,921 ft).
Activity: Enjoy G Adventures-supported handmade biodegradable soap products, for use on our treks. This G Adventures for Good project empowered local Cusqueña women to start their own business in order to reduce the environmental impact of treks in the region. Planeterra provided $10,000 of seed funding for two young entrepreneurs to register their biodegradable products in order to sell them to the tourism industry. "Esencia Andina" is now a successful business that produces biodegradable soaps, detergents, and natural products for travellers, guides, porters, and cooks on our treks.
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 3: Choquequirao Trek
Continue trekking through the Apurimac River canyon on the way to Choquequirao. Spot condors as you make your way up into the cloud forest, where you'll camp for the night. In the afternoon, take a guided tour of the ruins and marvel at your historical surroundings.
Activity: Continue trekking in the Apurimac River canyon, keeping your eyes peeled for the majestic condor in the skies above. Start the climb steadily upwards to the fascinating ruins of Choquequirao (3,000m/9,842 ft) and spend the night at a campsite nearby.
Activity: Enjoy a fully guided tour of the main square of Choquequirao and the surrounding terraces. The 'other Machu Picchu,' Choquequirao is built at the top of an almost untouched mountain in the province of La Convención. Ancient stone walls adorned with white stone llamas protect its two-leveled palaces and temples, systems of fountains, canals and aqueducts that fed the fantastic terraces farmed by the Inca during the Pachacutec government (XV century). Visit the colcas, used for agricultural storage and learn about the cultivation practices during the Incan Empire.
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 4: Choquequirao Trek
Explore the ancient ruins of Choquequirao further on your morning guided tour. Comparable only to Machu Picchu in its beauty, grandeur, and architectural accomplishment. Enjoy lunch near Choquequirao before the hike down to San Ignacio, the camp for the night.
Activity: The trek up to Choquequirao is a challenging one, enjoy plenty of time to explore with a second guided tour to take it all in. Visit sites currently being excavated, roughly 60 percent still remains covered by the encroaching forest. Visit storehouses and temples with a new appreciation for the restoration process to uncover this impressive site.
Activity: Set off for another day of hiking and trek along a gravel path until you reach some stairs that take you downhill along the side of the mountain for some spectacular views. Watch your step as you descend lower and closer to the San Ignacio River. Once you reach the river, head uphill to get to the San Ignacio campsite for the night.
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 5: Choquequirao Trek/Aguas Calientes
Leave early in the morning to make the way to Villa Carmen. Enjoy lunch before transferring to Ollantaytambo to catch the train to Aguas Calientes.
Activity: Your final day of trekking will take you along some mainly flat terrain which will be a lovely treat after 3 days of hiking. The paths are narrow but wide enough to walk along, keep your eyes peeled to spot some alpacas and llamas grazing in the fields and many kinds of birds native to the area flying through the sky.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Transport: Climb aboard, take a seat, and enjoy the ride.
Accommodation: Hotel Pachaqutec (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch

Day 6: Machu Picchu/Cusco
Wake up early to visit the breathtaking Machu Picchu. Enjoy a guided tour of the site and free time to explore until noon as permitted by the tourist ticket. Opt to visit the Inca Bridge, if time allows before taking the train back to Cusco in the afternoon where the trip will end upon arrival.
Activity: Rise and shine - the best time to see the Lost City of the Incas is in the early morning light. Follow the local guide to Machu Picchu to learn about its history at a leisurely pace. Gain local insight into the Inti Mach'ay cave, Inti Watana, the Temple of the Water, the Temple of the Condor, and the Room of the Three Windows. Take time to sit and feel the energy of this 15th-century site, now both a UNESCO World Heritage site and voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World (in a worldwide Internet poll).
Transport: Climb aboard, take a seat, and enjoy the ride.
