DAY 1, Thursday - Depart for Romania

DAY 2, Friday - Arrive in Bucharest
Arrive in Bucharest, the capital of Romania known for its wide boulevards and Belle Époque buildings. Transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. This evening at approximately 6 pm, enjoy a Welcome Dinner and orientation meeting with your Tour Manager on the fascinating journey that awaits you. We recommend that you select flights which arrive in your destination no later than 4 pm or earlier, if possible

DAY 3, Saturday - Bucharest City Tour
The tour begins at the gigantic Palace of the Parliament*, the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) with over 3,000 rooms. Also known as the “People’s House”, this building was created to prove to the world the wealth and power of the Socialist Republic of Romania. Head to Revolution Square and learn how the Romanian people finally succeeded in toppling the last communist dictator in Eastern Europe. Continue north to view Bucharest's Arch of Triumph, an impressive replica of the French Arc de Triomphe, built to commemorate the bravery of Romanian soldiers who fought in WWI. The balance of the day is at leisure or, join the optional Communist Era Bucharest. Learn how communism shaped the country, hear about the anti-communist revolution and the fall of the Iron Curtain*May 30 departure will visit the Parliament Palace on Day 4 due to scheduled European Union meetings.

DAY 4, Sunday - Cozia Monastery, Sibiu Old Town
Journey along the Wallachian plains and through the Olt Valley into the historical region of Transylvania. On the way, stop to visit Cozia Monastery, one of the most important structures of national medieval art and architecture in Romania and of great significance in Wallachian history. See original frescoes and the tomb of the ruler Mircea cel Batran, who built the monastery in 1388. In the afternoon, arrive in Sibiu, once the richest town in Transylvania. During your walking tour, view the impressive Old Town which features The Brukenthal National Museum, the Great Square, Huet Square, Liar's Bridge and Goldsmiths' Square

DAY 5, Monday - Astra Open-Air Museum, Citadel Alba Carolina, Calnic Church
Head outside the city for a visit to the unique Astra open-air Museum, Europe's largest open-air ethnographic museum. This collection of traditional farmhouses, thatched cottages, and artisans’ workshops offers insight into traditional Romanian village life. Afterward, drive to historical Alba Iulia to visit its crowning attraction the Alba Carolina fortress, the largest citadel in Romania. This spectacular star-shaped medieval fortress houses noteworthy museums and churches. Admire the beautiful decorations of the imposing gates and stroll along the bastions and towers. Visit the Reunification Cathedral, built to commemorate the Union of Transylvania with Romania, before continuing to Calnic. Here, explore the Calnic Fortified Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 13th century, as a residence for Saxon nobility, the fortified church, is one of the most impressive defensive structures in Transylvania. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure. In the evening, join the optional Sibiel with dinner at a local farmhouse. Drive to Sibiel, one of the best preserved old traditional villages in Romania and enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride. Afterward, savor a delectable traditional dinner at a local farmhouse while being entertained by talented local musicians

DAY 6, Tuesday - Bietran, Medieval Sighisoara
This morning, travel further into the heart of Transylvania, passing by Saxon towns and villages, admiring their unique architecture. Stop in Biertan, an authentic Saxon village founded in 1283 and visit the imposing fortified church. The church, built in the Late Gothic style is among the largest fortified churches in Transylvania. Later, discover Sighisoara one of Romania’s most charming medieval towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After lunch inside the former City Hall, begin a walking tour of the medieval center. Stroll along cobblestone streets, passing by colorful houses, the covered stairs, the mighty clock tower, and Vlad Dracul House, where Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula supposedly was born. Proceed to Targu Mures with the evening at leisure

DAY 7, Wednesday - Targu Mures City Tour, Travel to Pitra Neamt
The day begins with a morning city tour of spirited Targu Mures. Visit the Art Deco Palace of Culture, built between 1911 and 1913. Admire the intricate mahogany woodwork, beautiful frescoes, colorful stained glass and Italian marble staircase. Tour the Great Hall used for concerts and the celebrated Hall of Mirrors. Continue to Teleki-Bolyai Library, founded at the end of the 18th century is one of the oldest libraries in Transylvania. After, travel along the Red Lake towards the historical region of Moldova. En route, stop for lunch before continuing through the scenic Bicaz Canyon to Piatra Neamt for overnight

DAY 8, Thursday - Full Day in Piatra Neamt
Spend the day at leisure in Piatra Neamt, considered one of the most picturesque cities in Romania. Perhaps, join the full day optional tour to the famous Painted Monasteries of Humor, Voronet & Neamt. Visit Bukovina’s monasteries, among the most unique in all Christendom and whose exteriors are coated in stunning 15th and 16th-century frescoes. Tonight, enjoy dinner along with an entertaining traditional folklore show

DAY 9, Friday - Onesti, Brasov City Tour
Today, travel back to Transylvania. On the way, stop to visit Onesti, the birthplace of famous gymnast and five-time Olympic gold medalist Nadia Comaneci. Tour the school where she studied and trained, specializing in physical education and sports. Afterward, cross the Carpathian Mountains and travel through Covasna County to medieval Brasov. Embark on a tour of the city with its cobbled streets, imposing watchtowers and colorful Baroque buildings. Visit the First Romanian School Museum to view the impressive collection of rare books and manuscripts along with the first Romanian Bible. This evening, savor dinner together at a local restaurant

DAY 10, Saturday - Rasnov Fortress, Bran Castle
Begin your day with a visit to Rasnov Fortress, located on a rocky hill in the Carpathian Mountains above the town of Brasov. This medieval citadel, was built by Teutonic Knights between 1211 and 1225 as protection against invading Tartars and Turks. Next, drive to Bran and visit the medieval Bran Castle, shrouded by mystery and legend. The castle, located on a rocky promontory was built between 1377 and 1388 and made famous by Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. After, return to Brasov with time at leisure for individual interests

DAY 11, Sunday - Peles Castle, Bucharest
This morning, stop in Sinaia, en route to Bucharest. Here, you’ll truly be enchanted by a visit to romantic Peles Castle, former summer residence of Romania's first royal family. The castle is a masterpiece of German Neo-Renaissance architecture. Its 160 rooms are decorated with the finest examples of European art. Later, continue to Bucharest.
