Tour Itinerary

Cycle through Lake Manyara National Park, hike the Empakaai crater and spot flamingos, canoe along the shoreline of Momella Lake, learn about local tribes and their ways of life, safari through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

Go beyond four wheels and discover the many modes of exploring Tanzania's great outdoors. This eight-day tour is built for adventurous travellers who prefer a dose of adrenaline with their exploration. Canoe-safari through Momella Lake and spot hippos, giraffes, and water birds in their natural habitats, and hike into (and out of) an extinct volcanic crater. Of course, you'll have two days to explore the Serengeti in a 4x4, leaving your hands free for photo ops along the way (because it wouldn't be a trip to Tanzania without the safari photos to prove it).

Day 1: Arusha
Arrive at any time.
Activity: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.
Accommodation: Vijiji Lodge (or similar)

Day 2: Arusha NP
Head into Arusha NP and explore Momella Lake by canoe. Spot wildlife on the waters edge as they come to drink.
Transport: Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
Activity: Enjoy a scenic canoeing safari along the shorelines of Momella Lake. View buffalo, bushbuck, giraffes, hippos and many water birds living in and close to the water.
Activity: Sitting in the shadows of Mount Meru, enjoy the varied landscapes and wide array of animals living in Arusha National Park. From monkeys and birds in the dense forests, to buffalo, giraffe, elephants, and possibly lions, in the grasslands, this little park has a lot to offer.
Accommodation: Outpost Lodge (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch

Day 3: Arusha/Mto wa Mbu
Travel to Mto wa Mbu village and take part in a cultural walk to learn about village life in the area. Meet the women who run the village tours and enjoy a delicious home made traditional lunch.
Activity: Take part in a cultural walk to learn about life in this East African town. Mto wa Mbu has attracted some 18,000 residents from 120 different tribes. During the two-hour tour, visit the village's local market, go right to the farmer's fields, see how huts are constructed, and meet artisans in their shops. Afterwards, sit down with our new friends and enjoy a traditional lunch of meat and plantains.
Transport: Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
Accommodation: Twiga Campsite (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 4: Empakaai Crater
Ascend the rift valley escarpment into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and get ready for a beautiful hike into the extinct Empakaai Crater. At the end of the day, enjoy the view from the campsite over Ngorongoro.
Transport: Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
Activity: Descend into the extinct Empakaai Crater, with views of the crater lake, and in the distance, Oldoinyo Lengai, Tanzania's most active volcano. On the crater floor you can see flamingos, and other bird life, and if you are lucky, even buffalo, hyena, or elephant. After exploring in the crater, it's a steep walk back to your vehicle on the rim.
Transport: Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
Accommodation: Simba Campsite (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 5: Ngorongoro/Serengeti National Park
Enter the Serengeti NP and spend the day on a wildlife safari drive in search of the "big five", while taking in the vastness of the Serengeti plains.
Transport: Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
Activity: This is the reason you came to Africa. Charge your camera, grab your binoculars, and set out on safari. Your eagle-eyed driver will keep an eye out for wildlife - buffaloes, elephants, lions, wildebeests, zebras, and more. Tanzania's Serengeti tends to be less crowded than some of Kenya's reserves, so enjoy the scenery, the vast expanse of the grasslands, the play of light and shadow, and the up-close look at wild Africa.
Accommodation: Seronera Campsite (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 6: Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro
Opt for a balloon safari in the morning, or continue on with another wildlife safari drive. The rest of the day will be spent in the Serengeti, finishing the day with sunset on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.
Transport: Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.

Day 7: Ngorongoro/Lake Manyara
Head out early for a wildlife safari drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, then enjoy an afternoon biking in Lake Manyara NP - home to the famous tree climbing lions.
Transport: Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
Activity: Set the alarm and prepare for an early start to see the wonders of the Ngorongoro Crater. Here you'll see Maasai herdsmen in the morning mist. Your driver/guide will take you down into the crater and to all the best spots to view wildlife. Spot zebra, gazelles, buffaloes, and warthogs. The swamp and forest are home to hippos, rhinos, elephants, baboons, and monkeys. Keep your eyes peeled and camera ready to capture a pride of lions or a lone leopard walking along the crater floor.
Activity: Experience local cultures and wildlife from your bike on a ride through the farming village of Mto Wa Mbu, and onto the shore of Lake Manyara, where there are stunning views of the lake, the Rift Valley escarpment, and resident wildlife. The ride is on fairly flat single tracks.
Accommodation: Twiga Campsite (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 8: Mto wa Mbu/Arusha
Visit the G Adventures supported Clean Cookstove Project, then head back to Arusha, where the tour ends on arrival.
Transport: Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
Activity: Visit a Maasai village in the Monduli District and witness the benefits of the G Adventures-supported Clean Cookstove Project. In Tanzania, 95% of people rely on cooking with wood and coal. Women and girls spend hours walking to collect wood every day (making them vulnerable to assault and unable to use their time to go to school). Indoor smoke from open-fire stoves causes cancer, emphysema, pneumonia, blindness, and burns. Take a guided tour of these villages and meet the women that have been trained as stove engineers, visit bomas (traditional homes), and observe (or get your hands dirty) by helping the Stove Team build a stove in a home. See the beneficial impact of the clean-burning stoves on the health and daily lives of the Maasai villagers, especially the women.
Activity: Not ready to leave? Your CEO can help with travel arrangements to extend your adventure.

Questions & Answers

Question: How many suitcases can I take with me on my trip?

Each person is allowed one "check-in," and one "carry-on." Remember to take all valuables with you as "carry-on", because electronic equipment, cameras, laptops, jewelry, business documents and money are not covered by the airlines' liability, so always carry them aboard with you.

Question: Is Airfare Included in the Price?

Airfare from your point of origin to and from the trip is not included in the land price.

G adventures offers hands down some of the best tour packages out there!

By John M on Mar 11, 2018

The Japan vacation was better than I expected!!!! It was an active "moving" trip, which I truly enjoyed. I've done "coach tours" where you sit on the bus and they take you -- this experience was "hands on" riding the buses, trains and running through the streets -- it was amazing !!!!! We got the full feel of Japan and the people. This trip is not for the weak or slow pace crowd - you drag your luggage through the streets, up and down stairs --- it was truly exciting and exhilarating. G adventures has a fan for life. The instructions and assistance was outstanding -- Great job - Steve (AffordableTours.com) was outstanding !
