Often overlooked for the country's southern islands, northern Thailand offers incredible opportunities to witness local culture and tradition. You'll get time to explore the capital of Bangkok before heading up to scenic cities along the Mekong, wandering through rice fields and discovering temple-rich regions. This engaging itinerary satiates explorers that are eager to go off the beaten path, with time to visit historic sites and local towns at your own pace.

Day 1: Bangkok
Arrive at any time.
Activity: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards.
Accommodation: Prime Hotel Central Station Bangkok (or similar)

Day 2: Bangkok/Nong Khai
Enjoy a klong boat tour of Bangkok including a visit to Wat Pho. This evening board an overnight train to Nong Khai.
Activity: Travel by longtail boat on the busy Chao Phraya River. Go through the smaller klongs (canals) to see skyscrapers, temples, and shops in the distance, and the densely populated waterfront settlements up close.
Activity: This temple is known for its reclining Buddha, its feet covered with mother-of-pearl engravings of Buddhist symbols. Explore the large grounds and other compounds to see other Buddha figures, murals and the chedis that contain the ashes of Buddha. This is also the birthplace of traditional Thai massage.
Transport: Stretch out and get some well-earned rest en route to the next stop.

Day 3: Nong Khai/Chiang Khan
Arrive early in Nong Khai and enjoy a scenic drive along the Mekong, spotting Laos on the other side of the bank. Arrive in the charming town of Chiang Khan mid-morning.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Free Time: Opt to take a boat ride on the Mekong for views of Laos
, or hire a bike and meander through the nearby small towns and countryside.

Day 4: Chiang Khan
Experience morning alms-giving by offering rice to local monks. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, wandering around this small town on the Mekong.
Activity: Rise before the sun and head to the local market to get rice. Monks rely on food donations to eat and cannot eat after midday so they wake early and walk through town receiving donations and providing blessings. As the monks walk by place rice in their bowl until you are out of gifts.
Free Time: Opt to take a boat ride on the Mekong for views of Laos
, or hire a bike and meander through the nearby small towns and countryside.

Day 5: Chiang Khan/Phitsanulok
Travel to Phitsanoluk. Enjoy an orientation walk of one of Thailands oldest most historic cities, followed by an afternoon at leisure. For dinner, devour flying morning glory - a local specialty that also provides the entertainment of vegetables soaring through the air.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Free Time: Spend the afternoon exploring but be sure to be back for a unique dining experience

Day 6: Phitsanulok/Lampang
Drive to Sukhothai Historic Park and wander through ruins of this ancient Kingdom. Continue on to Lampang and enjoy a homestay in a traditional Lanna village. Participate in craft demonstrations and opt to help prepare a local meal.
Activity: Experience life in a traditional village with a homestay. Take in idyllic views of mountains and rice fields. Get to know your hosts and enjoy participating in activities including weaving, carving, and farming. Savour fresh local meals with the group and opt to lend a hand in the preparation.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Wander through this ancient royal capital, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a half-day tour. Get a close-up look at the remains of numerous temples, a royal palace, and Buddha figures dating back to the mid-13th century.

Day 7: Lampang/Chiang Mai
Travel to Chiang Mai. Climb the many stairs to Doi Suthep, the beautiful temple that overlooks Chiang Mai from its location atop a mountain. Fulfil dreams of Thai streetfood this evening at the incredible night market.
Activity: Pick up a a souvenir at this shopper's paradise. Wander through the market to find music, food, and local artists selling handmade crafts.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a golden Buddhist temple outside of Chiang Mai on the Mt Doi Suthep. Climb 300 steps to reach the temple and be rewarded with an unforgettable view. Admire the many Buddhist relics at this sacred temple and visit the white elephant shrine. Legend has it that the location of the temple was chosen after a white elephant carried a relic to the mountain and trumpeted three times before dying on the spot. Also, with a little luck, you may witness the chanting of the monks.

Day 8: Chiang Mai
Enjoy free time in Chiang Mai. Opt to go on a segway tour or cycle through the countryside. It's a feat to fit it all in.

Day 9: Chiang Mai

Free Time: Opt to explore Doi Inthanon and Doi Pui Suthep National Parks.
Activity: Pick out the best ingredients at a local market and learn how to make delicious Thai dishes.

Day 10: Chiang Mai to Ayutthaya
Free time in Chiang Mai before boarding an overnight train to Ayutthaya.

Day 11: Ayutthaya to Kanchanaburi
Arrive in Ayutthaya and enjoy a short tour of historical sites followed by a drive to Kanchanaburi. Explore the Death Railway Museum and Allied War Cemetery, and stretch your legs during a short stop at The Bridge on the River Kwai. Catch a boat transfer to a riverside resort in the jungle.
Activity: Take in a piece of World War II history on this visit. We're sure you've seen or at least heard of the famous movie "Bridge on the River Kwai." Well, now you can tour the real thing. It's massive, majestic, and imposing, and offers fabulous views of the river below.
Activity: Visit the Thai-Burmese Railway Museum to learn about the Death Railway's dark history, and the Allied War Cemetery where more than 6,000 prisoners are buried.
Activity: Explore the ruins of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ayuthaya served as Thailand's capital from the 14th to 18th centuries, when it ranked as one of the most magnificent cities in the world. Late in the 17th century its population reached one million, and foreign visitors wrote awestruck accounts of its size and splendour.

Day 12: Kanchanaburi
Enjoy free time to explore. Opt to go caving or trekking.

Enjoy swimming under the magnificent Erawan Falls. Later transfer to Bangkok for your last night out on the town.
Activity: Visit one of the world's most beautiful waterfalls. Its seven tiers offer a unique experience at every climb, reaching up to 1,500m (4921 ft). Swim in the turquoise pools, snap photos from the top tier, and opt to hike in the jungle to spot monkeys.
