Gaze at Andean vistas, experience the culture and mingle with the locals, conquer the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, savour the diverse cuisine in Peru.

Get off the beaten path in the highlands of Peru and discover stunning mountain scenery and remote cities few tourists visit. Getting to Cusco is half the adventure - travel by public bus keeps costs down and allows you to connect with the locals in the rarefied mountain air of the Andes. Climb the legendary Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the "Lost City of the Incas." We operate our own treks in Peru and can ensure the fair treatment of our porters - and an exceptional experience for you.

Day 1: Lima
Arrive at any time.

Day 2: Lima/Huancayo
Enjoy a spectacular bus ride into the Andes to Huancayo.

Day 3: Huancayo
Spend the day enjoying optional activities like hiking, biking, horseback riding, or just enjoy the scenery.

Day 4: Huancayo/Huancavelica
Travel to the picturesque colonial city of Huancavelica aboard el Tren Macho. Take in the Peruvian countryside passing by the window and enjoy the ride amongst the locals.
Transport: All aboard el Tren Macho! Enjoy the ride on this historical train that has been running since 1926 between Huancayo and Huancavelica.

Day 5: Huancavelica/Ayacucho
Travel through the highlands and remote communities of the Andes to Ayacucho.
Transport: Climb aboard, grab a seat, and enjoy the ride.
Free Time: Start exploring this interesting mountain town.

Day 6: Ayacucho
Spend two days in Ayacucho, with optional day tours to nearby archaeological sites, markets, city tours or individual exploration.

Day 8: Ayacucho/Andahuaylas
Pass by rural areas, massive mountain peaks and small villages to reach Andahuaylas.

Day 9: Andahuaylas
Enjoy free time in Andahuaylas. Opt to visit to the Sondor archaeological site, the Pacucha Lagoon or the market.
Free Time: Explore Andahuaylas, opt to visit nearby Pacucha Lagoon or the Sondor Ruins remaining from the Chanka Empire.

Day 10: Cusco
Enjoy free time to explore Cusco or take an optional city tour, head out whitewater rafting, horseback riding or mountain biking. Choose to pre-book an optional Cusco Cooking Class.

Day 12: Cusco/Ollantaytambo
Enjoy a full-day guided tour of the Sacred Valley. Stop at the G Adventures-supported women's weaving co-op before visiting a local pottery making community. Break for lunch at the G Adventures-supported Parwa Community Restaurant in Huchuy Qosco. After lunch, opt to head out on a hike to the Ollantaytambo storehouses and look out over the ruins. Or, wander around the cobblestone streets and visit a local Chicheria (corn beer bar).
Transport: Make stops along the way as you pass through this gorgeous valley, descending in elevation the whole way.
Activity: Visit the Ccaccaccollo community centre which G Adventures travellers' donations helped create in 2005, thereby enabling local women to sell traditional textiles to travellers. See local weaving and dyeing techniques used to create garments and souvenirs, and learn how the Planeterra weaving co-operative has impacted the community and those who visit it. This includes the purchase of alpacas to provide a steady supply of wool, looms, and sewing machines as well as several training courses on production, sales and small business management.
Activity: In the rural village of Cuyo Chico in the Sacred Valley, a group of families joined together to create a small business based on their traditional adobe ceramic crafts. Using clay from their surroundings, they mold bowls, plates, and all manner of decorations. Learn about the ceramics process as well as the traditional adobe brick-making that forms the basis of houses throughout the valley, all while taking in a spectacular view of the Pisac Ruins. After the demonstration, peruse the items for sale directly from the artisans in their shop.
Activity: Contribute to sustainable tourism in Huchuy Qosqo, a small village of 65 families in the Sacred Valley, by eating at the Parwa Community Restaurant. Learn how the resident-run restaurant was kickstarted by G Adventures and the Multilateral Investment Fund, to become a successful farm-to-table program that boosts the local economy and several spin-off microenterprises.

Day 13: Ollantaytambo/Cusco
Return to the Sacred Valley with your G representative to explore the sites of the Maras Salt Mines and the ancient Incan agricultural terraces of Moray. Continue on a scenic drive through small villages and stunning views of the Andean countryside. Stop for a picnic lunch at Piuray Lagoon and opt to explore by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Return to Cusco for the evening.
Activity: Drive a little more than an hour to get to the Moray archaeological site. Tour these unique Inca ruins, consisting of circular terraces and a sophisticated irrigation system located at 3500m (11483 ft). Learn about the history and study of this fascinating site - speculation has it that it was an Inca agriculture experiment station. Visit the impressive Maras Salt Mines, after Moray. See thousands of individual ancient salt pools spilling over a hillside. Learn about the different varieties of salt, and try the renowned pink salt, famous worldwide.
Activity: Set out on a scenic drive above the Sacred Valley of the Incas, stop along the way to lookout over small farms carved into the hills and small villages dotted along the landscape. Enjoy a picnic lunch at picturesque Piuray Lagoon, opt to relax, explore the lagoon by kayak, or stand-up paddleboard.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Travel by van to Ollantaytambo to catch the scenic train to Aguas Calientes.

Take time to sit and feel the energy of this 15th-century site, now both a UNESCO World Heritage site and voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World (in a worldwide Internet poll).
