Itinerary

Tour Itinerary

Immerse yourself in the epic grandeur of wild Alaska, as you view stunning Denali National Park from a deluxe domed railcar, walk across the face of a glacier, and meet Alaskan sled dogs up close to learn how a team is prepared for the Iditarod.

DAY 1: Arrive Fairbanks, Alaska

Arrive in Fairbanks, where you are met and privatelytransferred to your hotel. Tonight, enjoy a reception andwelcome dinner.

DAY 2: Fairbanks

Board a small plane for a sightseeing flight (weatherpermitting) that carries you over the majestic Brooks Rangeto a landing above the Arctic Circle, in the tiny town ofWiseman. Tour this far-flung outpost with a local guidewho shows you the nearby Trans-Alaska Pipeline, a marvelof engineering, and the Koyukuk River, a tributary of themighty Yukon River. Return to Fairbanks for an evening atyour leisure.

DAY 3: Talkeetna

This morning, it’s “all aboard” a deluxe dome railcar for ascenic ride through Denali National Park. Enjoy breakfastand lunch as you take in the passing vistas of Denali’spristine forests and snow-capped mountains. Arrive inTalkeetna, a quirky village said to have inspired the TVseries Northern Exposure, and transfer to your hotel.

DAY 4: Talkeetna

Board an airplane for a flightseeing adventure to the remotewestern end of Denali National Park for marvelous viewsof Denali as well as Mount Foraker and Mount Hunter.Continue over the Kahiltna Glacier to the climbers’ basecamp, where you land and step out on the glacier (weatherpermitting) for an exhilarating wilderness experience, beforereturning to Talkeetna. Enjoy your afternoon at leisure,explore on your own or choose from optional activitieslike fishing, ziplining, biking and hiking. Tonight, gatherwith your fellow guests and A&K Resident Tour Directorfor a Scenic Sundowner, as the sun sets outside your lodge.

DAY 5: Girdwood

Set out for Girdwood, stopping en route to visit the kennels offour-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser. Go up close withmembers of his Alaskan husky sled-dog teams, and eat lunchon site. Then, proceed to Girdwood, a resort community atthe base of Mount Alyeska. Cap your day with a ride on theScenic Alyeska Tram, summiting the mountain to take inthe glorious vistas of the surrounding countryside. Enjoy anevening at leisure at your resort.

DAY 6: Seward

Journey along scenic Turnagain Arm, through forests andacross coastal flats to Seward, keeping watch for Dall sheephigh up in the rocky cliffs. Next, board a boat and cruise intoKenai Fjords National Park, where you view massive glaciersand keep an eye out for whales, sea otters, walruses and othermarine wildlife. Enjoy lunch on board before returning tothe harbor. Next, board the Alaska Railroad dome rail train for the return to Girdwood, marveling at the natural sceneryand enjoying dinner on board.

DAY 7: Girdwood

Today, enjoy one of these Design Your Day activities.

Set Out on a Guided Interpretive Hike in the scenic PortageValley, with its verdant forests and glacier-carved landscapes.

Relax on a Leisurely Float Trip down the Portage River,taking in the breathtaking panoramas all around you.

Prospect for Gold on a visit to an authentic mining facilitythat dates from the original Alaskan Gold Rush.

Return to your lodge for an afternoon at leisure.

DAY 8: Anchorage

Set out for the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, whereyou enjoy an up-close visit with the native Alaskan speciesbeing rehabilitated there, including bison, moose and grizzlybears. Continue to Anchorage for a city tour featuring LakeHood, a port for seaplanes. Also visit Earthquake Park andview the historic downtown area. Tonight, gather for a farewelldinner.

DAY 9: Depart Anchorage

Transfer to the Anchorage airport and depart.
