Tour Itinerary

Germany is a country filled with spectacular scenery, medieval towns, fairytale castles, a fascinating history, and world-class beer. On this Germany tour, see Germany's highlights and visit its most famous cities, medieval towns, and scenic areas. Your vacation begins and ends in Frankfurt with overnights also in Cologne, Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, Munich, Oberammergau, and the Black Forest. You'll visit the must-see attractions in each city, including Cologne’s famous gothic cathedral, with its twin-steepled towers, and Berlin’s Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, badly damaged during the war and today a symbol of reconciliation.Magnificent scenery also awaits you on this Germany vacation. Enjoy a Rhine cruise along the Rhine River’s most scenic section, with castle-crested hills, terraced vineyards, and pretty wine towns. Visit King Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein Castle, nestled high in the Alps. Drive on the panoramic German Alpine Road to beautiful Lake Constance, Europe's largest freshwater reservoir, and to the charming island of Lindau. Stop in Rothenburg, a walled town that has retained its medieval character, and enjoy Germany's lush Black Forest region, where you’ll learn about woodcarving and enjoy coffee and Black Forest Cake—a special experience included by Globus.A tour to Germany would not be complete without sampling the local cuisine and beer. That's why Globus has included a beer at a famous brewery in Cologne, founded over 100 years ago. Bratwurst has been a tradition in Nuremberg for many centuries, and Globus has included dinner at a local Nuremberg restaurant to taste the traditional Nürnberger Bratwürste. But that’s not all…Globus has included first-class seats to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Performed every 10 years and set with the majestic alpine scenery as a backdrop, it’s a magnificent experience. From the beautiful scenery and exciting cities to the traditional food and wonderful beer, this Germany tour has it all!

Day 1: ARRIVE IN FRANKFURT, GERMANY.
Time to rest or to start exploring the bustling metropolis on the Main River. At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions and leave the hotel for a special welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (D)

Day 2: FRANKFURT–COLOGNE.
A special treat at the very start of your journey through Germany is a romantic RHINE CRUISE along the most scenic section of the Rhine River, with castle-crested hills, terraced vineyards, pretty wine towns, and the Lorelei rock. Disembark and drive to Cologne to visit the awesome gothic CATHEDRAL. Its twin 515-foot towers, five naves, splendid stained-glass windows, and the shrine of the Three Holy Kings are eloquent testimony to the quality of medieval engineering and craftsmanship. Afterwards, enjoy [LF] a beer at the Cölner Hofbräu Früh, one of Cologne’s famous breweries. (B)

Day 3: COLOGNE–BERLIN.
Ride the ICE TRAIN to Berlin, capital of reunited Germany, where sightseeing with a Local Guide in the once-divided metropolis includes the elegant Ku’damm, the restored Reichstag, Charlottenburg Palace, a picture stop at monumental Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial, and the 210-foot Victory Column in the vast Tiergarten park. Visit the KAISER WILHELM MEMORIAL CHURCH with its bomb-damaged tower, drive along Unter den Linden boulevard, and pass the State Opera House and Checkpoint Charlie. (B,D)

Day 4: AT LEISURE IN BERLIN.
A full day at leisure gives you a chance to join one of our exciting optional excursions, like to nearby Potsdam. (B)

Day 5: BERLIN–DRESDEN.
Arrive in Dresden, former capital of Saxony. Badly damaged by Allied bombing in February 1945, the city has since been restored to its baroque splendor. During your orientation, see the Zwinger Palace COURTYARD to admire its impressive architecture; the magnificent baroque Semper Opera, originally built in 1841, once destroyed by fire, then destroyed by bombing, and finally restored in 1985; and the newly rebuilt Frauenkirche. (B)

Day 6: DRESDEN–BAYREUTH–NUREMBERG.
Stop in Bayreuth for an orientation of this city, of festival fame. Richard Wagner came to Bayreuth in 1871 and was not satisfied with the existing 18th-century theater, the Markgräfliches Opernhaus, so he had a new one built. Today, the Festival Hall is used exclusively for the Bayreuth Festival, and only works by Wagner are performed there. Continue to Nuremberg, the town of children’s toys and gingerbread. Admire the impressive medieval ramparts and walk through the pedestrian area of the charming Old Town to St. Sebald Church, painstakingly reconstructed as a monument to peace from the rubble of near-total wartime destruction, and admire the Schöner Brunnen, a 14th-century fountain dedicated to the Holy Roman Empire. It is said that it brings good luck to spin the two brass rings. Then, have [LF] dinner at Bratwurst Röslein restaurant to taste the traditional Nürnberger Bratwürste. (B,D)

Day 7: NUREMBERG–ROTHENBURG–MUNICH.
In medieval Rothenburg, admire its ramparts and towers, cobblestone lanes, and 16th-century houses during your walking tour. Hear how the town survived the Thirty Years’ War, and shop for Christmas ornaments, for which this pretty town is famous. Next is the Bavarian capital, Munich. Tonight, you may wish to join an exciting optional dinner outing. (B)

Day 8: MUNICH–OBERAMMERGAU.
Sightseeing with a Local Guide of Germany’s “Secret Capital” features the Olympic Stadium, built for the 1972 Olympics; the 1,000-foot-high Olympic Tower; and Königsplatz, used for Nazi rallies during World War II. Drive along the Ludwigstrasse, and see the Bavarian Arch of Triumph and Field Marshall Hall. Also visit lively MARIENPLATZ with the Old and the New Town Halls and the gothic Frauenkirche. In the late afternoon, drive to the romantic Passion Play town of Oberammergau, where you will stay for the next two nights. (B,D)

Day 9: OBERAMMERGAU.
Afternoon and evening are dedicated to the world-famous PASSION PLAY. (B,L,D)

Day 10: OBERAMMERGAU–NEUSCHWANSTEIN–LINDAU–BIRNAU–BLACK FOREST.
Start today with a visit to King Ludwig’s magnificent NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE, which inspired Walt Disney. Follow your Local Guide through this fairytale castle on its craggy outcrop high above a sparkling lake. Then, continue along the panoramic German Alpine Road to the sunny northern shore of Lake Constance, Europe’s largest freshwater reservoir. Visit the charming island of Lindau and the baroque CHURCH at Birnau before entering the lush Black Forest for your overnight stay. (B,D)

Day 11: BLACK FOREST–HEIDLEBERG–FRANKFURT.
This morning, drive deeper into the Black Forest, then stop for [LF] a WOODCARVING DEMONSTRATION and Kaffee und Schwarzwaldkuchen (coffee and Black Forest Cake). Arrive in Heidelberg, Germany’s oldest university town, of Student Prince fame. Time to stroll around in the Old Town, then ride the FUNICULAR up the hill and visit the red-walled CASTLE where the GREAT VAT, a 58,000-gallon 18th-century wine cask, attracts particular attention. Return to Frankfurt, where a farewell dinner has been prepared to say auf Wiedersehen! (B,D)

Day 12: FRANKFURT.
Your vacation ends with breakfast this morning. (B)

The tour German Highlights was a wonderful experience, this is my first time using this operator (Globus) and I highly recommended. The entire operation was well planned, the tour included more sightseeing that expected, the tour director was excellent in every way and the hotels were more centrally located than my previous experiences and that alone is worth the praise. !

The tour used a new hotel chain: NH collection, which was not up to the standard of the other hotels. The rooms were smaller, in two hotels there was a window in the bathroom that, although the glass was tinted, shone a light on the bed when the bathroom was used at night, disturbing the second occupant of the room. We couldn't figure out the purpose of this window. the staff at these hotels were uniformly helpful and courteous, so this is not a reflection on them, just on the poor design of the rooms.

The tour operator substituted a hotel at the last minute, but it was a lovely place and we enjoyed staying there. The meals at the hotels, however, could use some improvement by offering a wider selection of entrees to choose from. At one hotel the option was chicken or Vegetarian.

Our tour started on a rough note. The advertised, and much looked forward too, train trip to Berlin was canceled by railroad due to bad weather the previous night. Globus did their best to make up for it but never-the-less it did not take place. This cast NO BAD REFLECTION on Wilford our tour guide ond Balush(sic) our driver. They jumped through hoops to get us to Berlin. Globus did too but still the result was a serious disappointment.

Frankfurt hotel would be better in the downtown. Welcome dinner would better should be quality than quantity. It was big big portion, beef was not tasty at all. Everybody left some portion. Optional tour on May 24th, country dinner's music was violin solo was not adequately.

The tour director was excellent. The bus driver was excellent as well. The Berlin hotel was located in a somewhat dangerous area. Had to walk in front of gangs on the corner and drunks laying in doorways to walk to dinner. Restaurant was Ming dynasty which we chose and it was great but had to walk the first 2 blocks thru this mess. Realize this is out of control per hotel so I would avoid hotel in the future.

Quite an extensive tour of Germany. The days were filled from early morning to early evening. The hotels were quite good ..included dinners were good but could have provided more choice and variety. The optional excursions were fairly priced. It seemed like there was a lot of time on our own in Berlin and Munich...while other stops felt slightly rushed. The tour guide was excellent..very personable and organized.

WIth the understanding that this was a TOUR, not a vacation, it did go by quickly. All the choices for our 12 days were interesting, well-informed adventures with one exception. Our visit to Neuschwanstein was a bitter disappointment, especially because I had built up such expectations for the adult grandchildren and my daughter who came to Germany with me. Having visited this beautiful and interesting area 3 times prior to traveling with Globus, I find the castle has become nothing more than a real photo opportunity with the castle in the background. The current restoration or construction on the red gate is easily understood to be a bit of an issue, however, did that require everything in the interior is covered, removed, or otherwise unavailable to the viewing public? The effort made by many, myself age 77 included, was definitely not worth valuable time we could have spent elsewhere. I have seen, been through, and know there are a great many wondrous sights to behold in Neuschwanstein, on this occasion we were hustled through approximately 4 rooms, no mention made about the floor design in the Singers Hall, the walls or the story behind the paintings thereon neither acknowledged nor explained to neophytes. Not even a peek at some of the covered furnishings. Other than a fair mention of the throne room, the entire visit was a real dud! I certainly do not hold Globus accountable for the pathetic method tours (or less than enthusiastic or ill-informed castle guides) are evidently conducted, I simply see no reason to waste time or effort making the castle a part of any future tours. I am very disappointed, it has been a favorite since granddaughters were young and energetic enough to RUN up the side of the mountain in the mid-1990's! Sorry to be so long-winded, once upon a time it truly seemed to be a Cinderella castle.

Always answered all of my questions, went above and beyond to get us the lowest prices, and to match the trip we wanted to our time availability.

I had another great experience travelling with Globus. Is my second time with them and I highly recommend them.

Globus tour guide and bus driver were both exceptional! The tour was a nice exposure to Germany. Occasionally, it would've been nice to spend a bit more time; it sometimes felt rushed. That is not all the fault of the tour provider, however. We had some fellow tourists that were consistently late to the bus which impacted everyone. Overall, a great experience!

This was my third Globus tour, so I knew what to expect. When we booked we knew this would be a fast paced tour but we would get to see a lot of Germany. Our tour bus was new. Our bus drivers and tour director were excellent. It was nice that Globus gave us all a bottle of water each day on tour, it was a nice gesture and it helped to not have to always hunt for water at every bus stop. Germany was wonderful!

The tour with Globus was very tiring, but we enjoyed all that we saw. We will probably not book another highlights tour again. We would prefer to stay at least 2 nights at each location rather than the fast-moving schedule on this tour.

An outstanding tour to see a lot of Germany. But the reason we were able to enjoy the long bus rides was our guide who was so knowledgeable, caring, humorous and meticulous in informing us of all we needed to know. His multicultural background and years of experience made him the best guide we have ever experienced.

Was a wonderful package. Gave a nice snapshot of Germany. The accomodations were wonderful. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided lots of information on each area.

All of the provided information about the trip was accurate. The Tour Director was not only professional but took a personal interest in the wellbeing of each of us. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history and shared it with us. The Driver was very friendly, cautious and drove safely, making the trip even more enjoyable.

This trip was fantastic, it greatly exceeded our expectations. The guide went out of his way to add more. He had a answer for every question and he sought out info constantly. Plus he was very amusing, also kind and considerate. We loved the hotels, the food the cities. The Black Forest and Bavaria very incredible. There were no problems. I had to go to an emergency clinic on a Sunday nite, he went with us and translated, when we were told it was cash only he offered us money if we didn't have enough. It was not needed, then he went to an all nite pharmacy got my medication. Our group was like a bunch of old friends we had a blast. The dinner excursions were a great deal of fun and we were glad we took advantage of them. We consider this trip a 5 star experience. Also our driver was an exceptional driver. Also he was helpful with getting on and off the bus. We can't wait to travel with Globus again.

Sometimes the motorcoach was a little long. Maybe suggest a little more time for walking around and more physical things. May have more age related so if older groups want a less vigorous activity, then they can bow out

We had a wonderful start to our trip, the tour guide was very experienced, pleasant & provided ample information to us. He was highly professional, responsive and patient at all times. The driver was friendly & also very helpful. Thank you very much!

Globus did a great job as always. Hotels were better than excellent in all locations.

Tour, tour guide, hotels, all great!

We would take the same trip in a heart beat, but we must admit we both had a difficult time understanding our Croatian tour guide because her accent was very heavy. We are inexperienced global travelers, and it definitely impacted the enjoyment of our trip. She was quite knowledgeable.

Loved the German Highlights, tour guide and bus driver from Budapest.

The experience was, overaall, very good however I was disappointed with several of the hotel selections. Most were to far from city center. Using Dusseldorf as an example, we arrive early evening but were so far out of the main area we never got a chance to see or explore Dussledorf. in Frankfort and Berlin we had the same problem...to far from city center. Most meals were hotel provided and were far below expectations.

One of the most enjoyable trips of my life. Our tour guide was spectacular, very knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. Everything was so well planned and nothing left out. It has made me want to return to some areas seen so that more time could be spent at some places such as Bavaria. How beautiful it was and the best part of the trip for me. I am planning another trip with Globus for next summer, possibly to Scotland. Carol

My husband and I had never taken a trip like this so we had nothing to compare. But the rest of the group had traveled on tours like this and they said that we had a top notched tour guide and was planned very well. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and are planning one in the near future. Thank you

Some optional excursions listed were not offered (symphony in Berlin, etc) and a few of the rooms we had were facing busy streets, so with the windows open it was noisey. Scott our tour guide with globus was exceptional. And as always it was great meeting and socializing with friendly tour travelers from all over the US. Our experience with Globus continues to be super...never had a bad trip or experience. And of course, I always love the breakfasts to get charged up for a busy day of touringl

We had a great time - it was an excellent experience overall!

The tour director on this trip did an outstanding job during the entire tour with her professionalism and knowledge.

Trip was very enjoyable. Globus provided a very competent tour guide and driver . Amount of at leisure time was just right. It allowed us to experience each city without feeling rushed.

Some of the hotels did NOT have air conditioning (or refused to turn it on) which is what I asked prior to booking this trip. Since it was hotter in EU for this time of year than normal, many nights were spent without much sleep. Also, many of these hotel locations are not in city centers or places that are walkable to the sites. They were almost always on the outskirts of everything, so any free time that we had we needed to grab a taxi to see anything. They were nice hotels otherwise.

Had a great vacation, which exceeded my expectations, can't wait for the next one, just have to decide where next :-)
