Itinerary

Tour Itinerary

Cycle through the stunning Karangahake Gorge, check out bubbling mud pools in a geothermal area, learn a traditional Maori greeting on the marae, hike the Tongariro Crossing — one of the world's greatest one-day hikes, kayak along the Whanganui River.

The North Island of New Zealand is blessed with spectacular scenery, ranging from bubbling thermal pools to fast flowing rivers. The best way to see all of this? Get up close and personal. This itinerary includes biking through Karangahake Gorge and hiking the Tongariro Crossing — one of the world's most famous one-day hikes — before jet boats and kayaks provide the transport along the Whanganui River. Mix in some bubbling mud and a traditional hangi dinner, and this is the perfect active introduction to New Zealand.

Day 1: Auckland
Arrive at any time.
Activity: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.
Accommodation: Ramada Auckland - Federal Street (or similar)

Day 2: Auckland/Rotorua
Enjoy a morning cycle through Karangahake Gorge, then travel to the Rotorua region to the Tamaki Maori Village. After a traditional greeting on the marae (meeting grounds), learn the arts of the haka and poi before a traditional hangi dinner.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Enjoy beautiful scenery on this interesting ride through Karangahake Gorge that combines history, nature, and adventure all in one trip! Follow the historic Paeroa to Waihi rail line. Cycle old lines and through a tunnel along the river that runs through the gorge. Take it easy, if you wish - this trail is suitable for cyclists with little experience and offers lots to take in on the way.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Visit the Tamaki Maori Village. Receive the traditional Powhiri welcome ceremony followed by a captivating stage performance explaining Maori history and culture. For dinner, enjoy a traditional Hangi meal, similar to the Hawaiian Luau, with dishes cooked in the ground. After, enjoy some quiet time with our Maori hosts by a fire.
Accommodation: Tamaki Maori Village (or similar)
Meal(s): Dinner (Enjoy a traditional Hangi dinner, cooked in an underground pit.)

Day 3: Rotorua
Enjoy a free day in Rotorua, a town in a geothermal area with boiling mud and hotpools. Opt to go whitewater rafting, tackle an offroad mountain bike track, go hiking, or hit the spa.
Free Time: Enjoy free time in Rotorua to enjoy one of the many optional activities available in the area.
Accommodation: Four Canoes (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast

Day 4: Rotorua/Tongariro National Park
Conquer the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, New Zealand's top-rated 1-day trek and spend time hiking an active volcano.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Enjoy spectacular views and otherworldly landscapes on this challenging and rewarding 19.4km (12 mi) trek across a volcanic range. This trek has been called one of the best day hikes in the world. Get prepared before you head out - go through a safety checklist and be sure to buy supplies, food, and water ahead of time. Dress accordingly - elements change constantly. Note: if the weather is too bad to trek, there will be alternative options such as smaller walks in the area or a visit to remote hot springs. If you do not wish to do the Tongariro Crossing, other activities can be arranged.
Accommodation: Skotel Alpine Resort (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Dinner

Day 5: Tongariro National Park/Whanganui National Park
Admire the scenery while heading to Whanganui National Park.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Accommodation: Blue Duck Lodge - River Quarters (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner (Enjoy a dinner of locally sourced food.)

Day 6: Whanganui National Park
Experience another of New Zealand's "Great Walks" (this time, from a canoe) on a day trip into the heart of Whanganui National Park. Explore the Whanganui River further by jet boat, visiting old Maori and European settlements.
Activity: Grab a paddle and life jacket and journey along the famous Whanganui River - New Zealand's third longest river. Soak in the wildlife and scenery, seemingly untouched by modern day. It's a great way to unwind and pack in a little more Kiwi adventure. (Note: actual distance and time of the paddle may vary according to weather conditions.)
Activity: Have fun and hold on! Fulfill your need for speed travelling down the amazingly scenic Whanganui River by jet boat.
Accommodation: Blue Duck Lodge - River Quarters (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Day 7: Whanganui National Park/Raglan
Travel north to the small town of Waitomo, located near an extensive underground cave system. Enjoy a free afternoon, and opt to tour the caves by boat, by foot or with a bit of adrenaline by rappelling into them. Continue on to Raglan for the night, and enjoy the sunset in this stunning coastal town.
Free Time: Take part in one of the optional activities around Waitomo.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Accommodation: Raglan Sunset Motel (or similar)
Meal(s): Breakfast

Day 8: Raglan/Auckland
Visit an eel farm which focuses on developing sustainable aquaculture before travelling north to Auckland where your tour will end around midday.
Activity: Not ready to leave? Your CEO can help with travel arrangements to extend your adventure.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Visit a local sustainable eel farm which focuses on developing sustainable aquaculture and biological solutions for dairy farms in an effort to restore lowland wetland eco-systems. Be inspired by their green initiatives - they practice the art of giving more back to the environment than they take out.

Questions & Answers

Question: Any escortd tours suitable for seniors?

All escorted tours are suitable for seniors in good health. In fact, touring is the preferred way to see the world for seniors due to the convenience of not having to plan, being accompanied by a tour director the entire time, and getting expert knowledge from local guides.

Question: How many suitcases can I take with me on my trip?

Each person is allowed one "check-in," and one "carry-on." Remember to take all valuables with you as "carry-on", because electronic equipment, cameras, laptops, jewelry, business documents and money are not covered by the airlines' liability, so always carry them aboard with you.

Question: Is Airfare Included in the Price?

Airfare from your point of origin to and from the trip is not included in the land price.

Our CEO Solofo for this trip is fantastic. He is patient and very nice. He went extra ways to help me and other members. I really enjoy this trip because of him! He is an excellent CEO. I definitely will recommend to other friends about him. Pls let him know that we really enjoy his introduction. He is also very informative and knowledgeable. In a word, he is excellent!

Great trip at a reasonable price.

Awesome trip in a great country. Our CEO was professional and fun!!!

G adventures offers hands down some of the best tour packages out there!

The Japan vacation was better than I expected!!!! It was an active "moving" trip, which I truly enjoyed. I've done "coach tours" where you sit on the bus and they take you -- this experience was "hands on" riding the buses, trains and running through the streets -- it was amazing !!!!! We got the full feel of Japan and the people. This trip is not for the weak or slow pace crowd - you drag your luggage through the streets, up and down stairs --- it was truly exciting and exhilarating. G adventures has a fan for life. The instructions and assistance was outstanding -- Great job - Steve (AffordableTours.com) was outstanding !
