JUL 31���AUG 1: Norway

Arrive in Oslo, where you are met and escorted toyour hotel. After an afternoon at leisure, join yourfellow adventurers for a welcome cocktail receptionand briefing. The next day, board a charter flight toglacial-covered Longyearbyen, capital of Svalbardand the sovereign Arctic archipelago of Norway.Tour the tiny town and its Arctic Museum, enjoylunch, and then board your expedition cruiser.

AUG 2���5: Arctic Norway

Very few people have the opportunity to viewthe remote wilderness of the Svalbard Islands(also known as Spitsbergen). In the archipelago,polar bears, walruses, Svalbard reindeer and anincredibly rich variety of birds are abundant,as are cathedrals of ice, glaciers and craggymountain peaks. An exquisite assortment of floraalso pepper this barren landscape. Your Captainand Expedition Leader determine the day’s bestsightseeing opportunities, which may include: NyAlesund, home to a polar research station and the northernmost post office in the world; the toweringAlkefjellet, also known as the “auk cliffs,” whichdrop directly into the sea and provide a hometo vast colonies of auks; and Monaco Bay andGlacier, frequented by polar bears, walruses, harborand bearded seals, and a multitude of seabirds.Throughout your voyage, our primary objectiveis to search for polar bears as they roam in theirnatural habitat. Two key advantages put us in thebest possible position for success. Cross the Greenland Sea and cruise along theArctic ice edge, as your Expedition Team preparesyou for the world’s largest island: Greenland. Forthe next three days, explore its rarely visited eastcoast and Scoresby Sound, the largest and longestfjord system in the world. Embark on Zodiacexcursions through the fjord’s intricate network,taking in its islands and icebergs, and searching forresidents that include the musk ox and Arctic fox.Ice conditions permitting, disembark for a visit tothe small settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit, one of themost isolated villages in Greenland.

AUG 11���13: Iceland

Enjoy a relaxing day at sea cruising the DenmarkStrait that separates Greenland from Iceland.Watch for wildlife from the deck in between moreinsightful lectures by your Expedition Team.The next day, arrive in picturesque Husavikand visit the Whale Museum, supported by A&KPhilanthropy and one of the world’s foremostcenters focused on research of whales and theirhabitat. Choose to embark on a scenic whale-watchingtour followed by free time in Husavik or set off for Godafoss Falls and geothermal LakeMyvatn. Tonight, join your Expedition Team andfellow guests for a special farewell reception anddinner. The following day, explore the glacier-carvedterrain of Iceland’s West Fjords with itsDrangajokull Glacier. Visit the small fishing villageof Grundarfjordur. Then, choose to explore theSnaefellsnes Peninsula, opting for a boat tourand fresh sushi adventure around an archipelagoteeming with exotic birds or a hike over the region’slava trails, steeped in Viking lore.

Aug 14: Reykjavik

Arrive in Reykjavik, the northernmost capital in the world, and a city filled with remarkable historic sites and distinctive natural beauty where you enjoy a city tour with lunch. Later, re-board the 'Le Boreal' to continue your Grand Arctic Adventure.

AUG 15���17: The Westman Islands & Westfjords

Over the next three days, explore Iceland’s iconicsouthern volcanoes and western fjords. Arrive inthe volcanic archipelago of the Westman Islands.On your first morning, visit Heimaey Island andits local village with farmhouse ruins dating backto the year 650. Conditions permitting, board yourZodiac for an up-close view of Surtsey Island,Iceland’s southernmost point and a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. Continue along the rugged western fjords of Iceland, where we take advantageof our expedition vessel to explore the rugged andremote coastlines of Iceland’s stunning Westfjords.Breidafjordur and Isafjordur are among the areaswe plan to explore, with possible expedition stopsto include Dyndjani waterfall, Flatey island andHornstrandir Reserve.

AUG 18���19: Lindenow Fjord, Greenland

Relish a day at sea, watching for wildlife whilecruising the relatively narrow Denmark Strait,which connects the Arctic Sea with the AtlanticOcean. This evening, join your Expedition Teamand fellow guests for the Captain’s welcomereception and gala dinner. Arrive the next day onGreenland’s Lindenow Fjord complex. Take inthe views from the ship as your onboard geologistexplains how the fjord was formed. Embark on aZodiac excursion amid towering mountains andspectacular glacial scenery. Enjoy a nature walkobserving the plant succession between differentmoraines.

AUG 20���23: South Greenland

Explore Greenland’s southern coast, inlandwaterways and remote villages for the next threedays, retracing the early colonization trail ofErik the Red as well as Greenland’s history ofexplorations, which ultimately led to the discoveryof North America. Based on conditions, yourCaptain determines the day’s best sightseeingopportunities and excursions, which may bringyou to the traditional village of Qaqortaq andPrince Christian Sound, a stunning 60-mile-longfjord. Opportunities to delve deeper into ancientNorse history include possible excursions to:UNESCO-listed Hvalsey Ruin, considered southernGreenland’s largest and best-preserved Norse site;the colorful fishing village of Narsaq, which datesback to the year 1000; and beautiful Eriksfjord,where you visit the Brattahlid homestead of Erikthe Red and the first Christian church in thewestern hemisphere.

Arrive at Kangerlussuaq, located on the tip of its namesake fjord and once a strategic allied stronghold during World War II. Enjoy an ice-cap tour with a local guide. Later, re-board the 'Le Boreal' to continue your Grand Arctic Adventure.

In 1906, explorer Roald Amundsenbecame the first person to transit the entireNorthwest Passage. Embark on yourvoyage from exactly where he did, cruising alongthe stunning West Coast of Greenland, which youexplore for five days: Your Captain and ExpeditionLeader determine the day’s best sightseeingopportunities, which may include: northernmost Sisimiut for a visit to its local museum and an Inuitsea kayak demonstration; Disko Bay, a wide inletoff of Baffin Bay first explored by Erik the Redin 985; the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site at the mouth of one of the most activeglaciers in the world; and the Uummannaq Fjordsystem, a geological wonder teeming with marinelife, where you also discover the ancient huts of theThule hunters.

SEP 1���8: Nunavut & the Canadian Arctic

Cruise west into the Canadian Arctic Archipelagoand Nunavut, voyaging into the heart of thislegendary sea route. Your Expedition Leader andCaptain determine your excursions, which mayinclude: the Inuit Village of Pond Inlet, where youvisit a local community center and co-op to shop for artisansoapstone carvings; Beechey Island, where Britishexplorer Sir John Franklin and his expeditionsought refuge in 1845 before his ill-fated attempt toconquer the passage, and where you see the woodengrave markers for three of his men; and the natural harbor of Gjoa Haven, where Amundsen took atwo-year refuge among the Netsilik Inuits whilewaiting for ice to abate, before he became the firstperson ever to transit the full Northwest Passage.

SEP 9���12: The Northwest & Yukon Territories

In the Northwest Territories, you may stop fora landing at Ulukhaktok (Holman village) andfor an unforgettable visit with its Inuit people,who greet you with drum dances at the shore. AtFranklin Bay, see the rare geological phenomenonof the “Smoking Hills,” cliffs of bituminous shalecombusting and burning for millennia. Conditionspermitting in the Yukon, you may also land atHerschel Island. Evidence of the island’s whalingculture remains along its coastline — one greatlyaffected by impacts of sea erosion and climatechange.

SEP 13���14: Beaufort & Chukchi Seas

Sail from the wide Beaufort Sea into the U.S.,clearing at Point Barrow, Alaska (U.S. Customsclearance only). Relax on your private balcony orjoin fellow guests on deck and, with some luck, spotthe chatty beluga by day or the evening’s northernlights.

SEP 15���16: Little Diomede Island & Nome, Alaska

Cruise to Little Diomede, home to the traditionalIngalikmiut. Conditions permitting, take a Zodiacride. The next day, disembark in Nome and enjoy atour and dogsled demonstration. Board your A&Kinternal flight to Anchorage. Continue on your flighthome.
