Itinerary

Tour Itinerary

Savor the diversity and history of the great cities of New England and Eastern Canada on this enchanting vacation. The highlight of this tour is a 7-night cruise to Canada’s historic towns and beautiful places. Aboard a 5-star Holland America ship, travel to Québec City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Canada’s only walled town; charming Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island; scenic Sydney, originally settled by Highland Scots; Halifax, famous for its lighthouses on cliff side ledges and tiny villages huddled in rocky inlets; Bar Harbor, surrounded by Acadia National Park, where you can stroll along the charming waterfront and browse the shops and galleries; and Boston. But that’s not all…this East Coast tour also includes sightseeing of Boston’s historic sights, a visit to Montréal’s Notre Dame Basilica, and a tramway ride to the 4,080-foot summit of Cannon Mountain in gorgeous Franconia Notch. On a clear day, you can see the mountains of four states and Canada! Globus has also arranged for you to enjoy unique experiences on this tour. In Vermont, you’ll visit a working maple syrup farm to learn the art of making maple syrup and enjoy a special treat. In New Hampshire, learn about the endemic flora and fauna at a Raven Interpretive Wildlife Program. This incredible East Coast vacation is packed with adventure—both on land and at sea!

Day 1: ARRIVE IN BOSTON.
Welcome to Boston! At 6 pm, meet your traveling companions for a welcome drink. Your Tour Director will prepare you for your upcoming adventure.

Day 2: BOSTON–FRANCONIA NOTCH STATE PARK–NORTH CONWAY.
Enjoy an orientation tour of Boston including Boston Common, the State House, and Faneuil Hall. Depart Boston for New Hampshire and the scenic White Mountains, New England’s greatest range and premier outdoor playground. At Franconia Notch State Park, board the Cannon Mountain TRAMWAY for a thrilling ride to the 4,080-foot summit. On a clear day, you can see the mountains of four states and Canada! Tonight, enjoy a [LF] RAVEN INTERPRETIVE WILDLIFE PROGRAM with a local wildlife expert focusing on the region’s ecological and diverse environs. (B,D)

Day 3: NORTH CONWAY–STOWE–VERGENNES.
Depart for a beautiful drive to Stowe, stopping for a tour at a [LF] MAPLE SYRUP FARM, where you’ll learn the art of making maple syrup and enjoy a local treat. Continue to Vergennes, overlooking Lake Champlain with views of the Adirondacks and Green Mountains. (B,D)

Day 4: VERGENNES–SHELBURNE–MONTRÉAL.
Visit nearby SHELBURNE HERITAGE PARK, which exhibits one of the nation’s most extraordinary collections of American decorative, folk, and fine art. It showcases buildings from around New England and New York, including an 1890 railroad station, a lighthouse, a stagecoach inn, and an Adirondack lodge. Travel northwest to Montréal, Canada’s second-largest city. As Montréal has a unique mix of historical, natural, and cultural offerings, you may like to visit Old Port Montréal, the McCord Museum, or stroll around Mount Royal Park. (B)

Day 5: MONTRÉAL (EMBARKATION).
This morning, sightseeing with a Local Guide includes NOTRE DAME BASILICA, the Old Seminary of St. Sulpice, and a drive to the top of Mount Royal to enjoy a panorama of the city. This afternoon, transfer to Montréal’s port to embark on your ship for a 7-night CRUISE. (B,L,D)

Day 6: QUÉBEC CITY.
Visit Canada’s only walled city, which, until the British victory of 1759, was the center of New France and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll within the walls and see the Place d’Armes, Laval Seminary, and ancient Place Royale. Also see Old World houses crowding the narrow streets in Lower Town by the St. Lawrence River and the historic Plains of Abraham. (B,L,D)

Day 7: SCENIC CRUISING: GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE.
Québec City marks the start of Saguenay Fjord. This 200-mile-long natural canal brings saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean inland and creates a beautiful environment for waterfront living for the communities of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Spend the day at leisure aboard the ship, taking advantage of the numerous amenities. (B,L,D)

Day 8: CHARLOTTETOWN.
Spend the day in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island, the provincial capital named after Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III. The city is famous for hosting the 1864 conference that three years later led to the creation of the independent Dominion of Canada. Perhaps take a trip to Cavendish and visit the famous Anne of Green Gables homestead. (B,L,D)

Day 9: SYDNEY.
So green and Gaelic is Cape Breton Island that Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell called it home for the last 37 years of his life. In fact, Cape Breton was principally settled by Highland Scots whose families had come out on the wrong side of rebellions against the Crown. You can still see this heritage in the accents in some remote villages—and in the great popularity of Scottish-style folk music. Today, you may choose to travel along the scenic Cabot Trail or visit historic Louisbourg Fortress, which recreates life in French-occupied Canada. (B,L,D)

Day 10: HALIFAX.
Arrive in Halifax, where lighthouses stand sentinel on cliff side ledges and tiny villages huddle in rocky inlets. Take time to explore Citadel Hill with its early 19th-century star-shaped fort, the tree-shaded walks of the public gardens, and Fairview Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 100 people who perished on the Titanic. (B,L,D)

Day 11: BAR HARBOR.
Arrive in Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island, Maine’s oldest summer resort, and stroll around the charming waterfront with its many shops, galleries, and boutiques. Alternatively, take an optional excursion to picturesque Acadia National Park, one of America’s most visited parks. (B,L,D)

Day 12: BOSTON (DISEMBARKATION).
The tour ends this morning. Guests depart on individual schedules; airport transfers are provided. Please schedule your flights after Noon. (B)

Questions & Answers

Question: I have very restrictive dietary needs. Could you tell me whether all meals on the ship are sit down or is there a buffet option?

The cruise potion of your trip will take place on Holland America’s MS Zaandam. Holland America offers a wide range of delicious onboard dining options. While they do have a buffet, they also offer a handful of specialty, made to order, dining restaurants (which might be at an additional cost). Please let your travel consultant know of your specific dietary requests before booking and so they can make sure you can be accommodated.

Question: How many suitcases can I take with me on my trip?

Each person is allowed one "check-in," and one "carry-on." Remember to take all valuables with you as "carry-on", because electronic equipment, cameras, laptops, jewelry, business documents and money are not covered by the airlines' liability, so always carry them aboard with you.

Question: Is Airfare Included in the Price?

Airfare from your point of origin to and from the trip is not included in the land price.

This is our 2nd tour with Globus and the trip went very well. Very nice hotels.

Since this Globus trip included a cruise, I was disappointed and frustrated with the difficulty that I and others incurred in finding a Cruise booking number from Holland America so that excursions and other information could be found. Since this was a Globus trip, it seems a part of Globus' responsibility.

I would have skipped the land tour. We "drove by" many interesting places and our guide said when we return those would be good places to visit. There were several people from one particular state and the guide catered to them the entire trip. She was not friendly to the rest of us. Never spoke when getting on or off the bus. Probably never knew my name.

The resort on the last night of the land portion of this trip was not conducive for older travelers. Climbing the narrow stairs with carry on luggage was difficult for a healthy person. Additionally, individuals on the top floor had to be careful hitting the dormer ceilings.

I enjoyed all of the locations we stayed at. My only suggestion would be: the Basin Harbor Resort is a lovely place, but for elderly people the lack of elevators is a drawback. The steep stairs are a killer. Otherwise the service there was wonderful!

Accommodations were good except for Basin Harbor Club. Facilities are old, creaky, smelly, unsafe stairways and outdoors smelled like a barnyard. We were supposed to have 2 beds and the room had one. With the help of the tour guide we got a different room in a newer building.

The Globus Tour was good as well as their tour guide; the Holland American Line was good except I think they could delete the Sydney, Canada spot. Nothing going on there, would prefer and addt'l day in either Quebec City, Halifax or Bar Harbor (although our ship didn't make this stop because of weather).

Beautiful scenery! Sometimes, though, the tour director would miss pointing out things until we were past them.
