The rediscovered jewels of the Inca Empire, the magnificent scenery in the Peruvian Amazon, the mysterious Nazca Lines, and the archaeological treasures of Chiclayo and Trujillo await you on this tour through Peru. Peru is one of the great originating centers of ancient culture, and on this vacation you’ll discover its archaeological treasures, appreciate its ancient ruins, and learn about its culture. Begin with a trip to Peru’s Amazon, where you’ll discover the tropical jungle on multiple boat trips. Be on the lookout for turtles, caimans, monkeys, river birdlife, and more—not to mention the lush vegetation. Search by canoe for the resident giant river otters, and visit a Parrot Clay Lick to watch the parrots and macaws. In Lima, see vestiges of the Spanish colonial period before heading to Cusco and the Sacred Valley. See the Temple of Sacsayhuaman, which was built in the early 12th century. Some of the stones used to build the fortress weigh more than 350 tons, fit so tightly together that a piece of paper will not fit between the stones. Just ponder how it was built without the help of modern technology and machinery! While at the ruins, experience a Mother Earth Ceremony, performed by a local shaman to thank Mother Earth and to ask for good health and safe travels. A highlight of your vacation is a tour to Machu Picchu. Stand in awe as you witness the ancient ruins surrounded by soaring peaks—one of the most majestic images in South America! No trip to Peru is complete without seeing the Nazca Lines. When seen from the air, the lines form precise geometric shapes that number in the hundreds. Archaeologists remain puzzled about why the ancient Nazca people, who thrived here from 200 BC to 500 AD, created illustrations that could only be seen from far above the Earth. To round out this Incan Empire discovery, head to Chiclayo—Peru’s Egypt—for an archaeological feast! Visit tombs dating back to 100 AD, still intact, and the ceremonial pyramids feared by many natives, who often refer to it as “Purgatory.” Not far from Chiclayo, Trujillo offers the chance to see the Sun and Moon Pyramids, and some of the oldest and largest archaeological sites in South America. Ancient ruins, fascinating culture, and captivating flora and fauna—these all await you on this wonderful Peruvian vacation. For travelers ready for a new adventure, this tour is for you!

Head into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where you will enjoy a special lunch prepared exclusively for Globus guests at a private location. Here, enjoy a [LF] live Andean band and experience a mystical El Pago a la Tierra, or MOTHER EARTH CEREMONY, performed by a local shaman. These ceremonies thanking Mother Earth and asking for good health and safe travels have been practiced in Peru since before the arrival of the Incas. Next, continue to PISAC, an old mountain village where you will have free time to shop for local wares, such as alpaca sweaters and blankets, jewelry, or hand-painted ornamental dishes and vases. Stay in the Sacred Valley tonight, and enjoy a special dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 8: SACRED VALLEY–MACHU PICCHU.
This morning, visit the Inca Fortress of OLLANTAYTAMBO, followed by the opportunity to visit a [LF] HOME, meet some of the locals, and experience their traditional way of life. Next, board the Vistadome TRAIN for a short journey through the lush Urubamba Valley. Then, transfer to a motorcoach for the ascent to legendary MACHU PICCHU, the “Lost City of the Incas,” high above the steep valley overlaid with dense tropical jungle. Your Local Guide will bring you closer to the lives and mysteries still hidden in these amazing structures built by the Pre-Columbian masters of this sacred land. Tonight, learn how to mix the perfect Pisco Sour, Peru’s national drink, before an exquisite dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 10: CUSCO
. This morning, learn more about the Incas and their struggle against invading Spaniards on your Cusco CITY TOUR, with visits to the imposing CATHEDRAL and the SANTO DOMINGO MONASTERY. During your city tour, you will be greeted by an INCA KING, so have your cameras ready! Also visit the semi-circular KENKO Temple with its stone altars and labyrinth of passages, and see the ancient site of Puca Pucara before the TEMPLE OF SACSAYHUAMAN, perched on a hillside overlooking Cusco. It remains unfathomable how and when this fortress of gigantic stones—with some blocks weighing more than 350 tons—was built. The remainder of your day is free to explore at your leisure. Tonight, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. (B,D)
Day 11: CUSCO–JULIACA–PUNO (LAKE TITICACA).
Board a flight to Juliaca, where you will continue to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. (B,D)
Day 12: PUNO. EXCURSION TO LAKE TITICACA.
Today, take a motorboat trip to some of the more unique islands of LAKE TITICACA. Start with TAQUILE ISLAND, which was once part of the Inca Empire and was one of the last areas of Peru to be conquered by Spain in the 16th century. The Spanish banned traditional dress on the island, which is why the Spanish peasant dress can still be found today. Next, travel to the fascinating UROS ISLANDS, home to the Uros Indians, who were forced to live on the lake as the Inca Indians pushed farther into their territory. These islands are completely made by reeds and are continually added to as they disintegrate to the bottom of the lake. (B,L,D)
Day 13: PUNO–SILLUSTANI–JULIACA–LIMA.
Depart for Juliaca this morning, visiting the ruins of SILLUSTANI en route. At this pre-Incan burial ground, see where the ancient Aymaras buried their high priests in chullpas—above-ground, cylinder-shaped tombs dating back to the 1400s. While here, [LF] spend some time with the locals, see their HOMES, learn how they work, what they eat, and gain a better understanding of their lives. Fly from Juliaca to Lima this afternoon. (B)
Day 14: LIMA–PARACAS. BALLESTAS ISLANDS CRUISE & NAZCA LINES.
Enjoy a scenic drive south along the Pan-American Highway to the Bay of Paracas. Embark on a CRUISE out to the Ballestas Islands, which are inhabited by a wide variety of sea mammals and exotic birds, including boobies, sea lions, and Humboldt penguins. The huge Candelabro, a candelabra-shaped etching on the Paracas cliffside, can also be seen as you cruise back to shore. Continue to the town of Pisco, the wine capital of Peru. Have your camera handy today as you board your aircraft for FLIGHTSEEING over the Nazca plains, which can only be appreciated by air. Your pilot will point out the mysterious markings known as the NAZCA LINES, a series of drawings of animals and geometric figures etched into the parched soil—some up to 1,000 feet long! Theories vary, but the most accepted belongs to German mathematician Maria Reiche, who dubbed the land the “astronomical calendar” of the ancient Peruvians. Enjoy dinner this evening at your hotel. (B,D)
Day 15: PARACAS–LIMA.
After some free time in Paracas, return to Lima today. Tonight, your Tour Director hosts a memorable farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B,D)
Day 16: LIMA–CHICLAYO.
Take a morning flight to Chiclayo and begin with a visit to SIPAN, discovered in 1987 and considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries this century due to its intact tombs. Dating back to around 100 AD, these pyramid-shaped tombs made from adobe hold many similarities to those found in Egypt. A visit to the SIPAN MUSEUM shows a reconstruction of the tombs as well as the artifacts found inside them. Visit the TUCUME PYRAMIDS, where ancient mythology and legend envelops these 26 adobe pyramids that once served as a ceremonial complex. Many natives still fear the site, known locally as “Purgatory.” (B,L)
Day 17: CHICLAYO–TRUJILLO.
En route to Trujillo, visit EL BRUJO, a stepped pyramid believed to be used for religious ceremonies between the 1st and 7th centuries. At the museum, learn about and see the artifacts found in the tombs. (B)
Day 18: TRUJILLO–LIMA.
Visit the SUN & MOON PYRAMIDS, the largest Pre-Columbian structures in South America, and hear how and why human sacrifice was practiced here. Continue to CHAN CHAN, a well-planned metropolis and ancient capital of the Chimu Empire. This archaeological site is characterized by very tall walls, some of which are 26 feet high, that enclose each of the 11 citadels. After lunch on Huanchaco Beach, transfer to the airport for your return flight to Lima. (B,L)
Day 19: LIMA.

Peru is a beautiful country and the trip was amazing. The tour director was the best and the local guides were great. The fellow travelers were a fun bunch. The humidity of the rain forest and the altitude of the Andes made this the most physically challenging trip I've ever taken but well worth it. Take all of your medications (altitude, diarrhea and malaria) and you will have a great time.
The Tour guide and driver did a professional job. Alex went above and out of his way to insure guests were satisfied and safe. Global should be very pride of him knowledge. Thanks for an outstanding trip.
Make sure Per is on your bucket list. Fantastic trip! We saw sooo much great stuff on this trip.!
The tour director was outstanding in coordinating all the complex logistics of this trip. Machu Picchu and the Ballesta Islands boat trip were the highlights of the trip but the whole trip was very enjoyable. The local guides were very knowledgeable but were kind of long winded. Alex in particular was extremely knowledgeable and was very passionate about his areas of expertise.
Most people visit Peru to experience Machu Picchu. This trip provided that experience but also so much more. I never realized how much there is to see and do in Peru. It's a beautiful country (although quite poor) and Globus did a great job of showing our tour group the highlights. The hotels were some of the nicest I've stayed in on a tour at this level and our tour director was fantastic.
Trip as usual was wonderful. We will book another trip with Globus and Affordable Tours for sure! It always meets our expectations.
The tour guides were professional and knowledgeable. They paced the tours so that everyone could enjoy the tour.
Trip far exceeded expectations.
My husband and I absolutely loved our trip to Peru. The itinerary and accommodations exceeded our expectations! Our tour director was fabulous as were our tour guides. They were all so knowlegable and made the trip really memorable. The only negative of the trip was that one of our tour members, who was in her mid 80's, had difficulty walking and had health issues which sometimes delayed the group to their destination. She was also a difficult personallity (which no one could have forseen) and constantly interrupted the tour director and guides with inappropriate questions and comments. Our tour director and our guides handled it very tactfully and professionally to their credit.
