Tour Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVE IN QUITO, ECUADOR.
Welcome to one of the smallest yet most biodiverse countries in South America. Ecuador offers a panorama of scenery and climates—from the Pacific Coast to the rainforest and the Amazon to the high slopes of the Andes.

Day 2: QUITO.
Your included PRIVATE CITY TOUR showcases the Old Town, where colonial history still permeates the air, surrounded by beautiful architecture, and religious and cultural sites. One of the highlights is a visit to San Francisco Square, where you will see the La Compañía church, which has the most ornate and richly sculptured façade and interior. Afterward, visit the Old Town's famous hill, Panecillo or "Little Bread," where you will see the Virgen de Quito angel statue. Finish off your tour at a bustling Ecuadorian market. (B)

Day 3: QUITO-COCA-AMAZON LODGE
Fly to Coca and travel by CANOE TRIP downriver to your selected Amazon lodge, your home base for the next three nights. (B,L,D)

Day 4: AMAZON LODGE
At the Napo Wildlife Center: Your time in the Amazon accompanied by a Local Guide includes early morning EXCURSIONS to parrot clay licks; dugout canoe rides in search of river otters, potoos, kingfishers, hoatzins, jacamars, hawks, and monkeys; and walks along the canopy platform to view spider monkeys, aracaris, toucans, blue and gold Macaws, numerous species of tanagers, and the red-rumped cacique. In your free time, consider a walk through the jungle in search of interesting plants and colorful or well-camouflaged insects. You are also invited to join families of the Anangu indigenous community on their daily activities, such as harvesting bananas, coco, and manioc. (B,L,D daily)

At the Sacha Lodge: During your stay, enjoy NATURE EXCURSIONS with a Naturalist who introduces you to the Amazon. On the suspended rainforest canopy walk, your Naturalist points out many different species of vibrantly colored birds. Jungle walks show off the immense biodiversity and medicinal plants that have been used by the native cultures for hundreds of years. Visit the lodge's butterfly house, one of Ecuador's largest, and take a night walk or canoe ride with a Local Guide to discover creatures that can rarely be seen during the day! You will also cruise through the flooded forest in search of troops of squirrels, capuchin, and howler monkeys—and maybe even the incredibly well camouflaged 3-toed sloth. After fishing for piranhas, arrive at the Kapok Tree tower, perched 135-feet high. Get close-up views of birds as the sun sets on volcanic Mount Sumaco and the Andes. (B,L,D daily)

Day 6: COCA-QUITO
Depart your Amazon lodge and fly from Coca to Quito today. The remainder of your afternoon is at leisure. (B)

Day 7: QUITO. EXCURSION TO OTAVALO.
Today, experience the traditional ways of the Otavalo people. With your Local Host, visit Otavalo's famous INDIAN MARKET, full of textiles, clothes, vegetables, and much more. Enjoy the drive here, as it passes the often snowcapped Cayambe Volcano. The Ecuadorian Line runs directly through the glacier of the immense volcano, which is the highest worldwide point on the Ecuadorian Line. Next, visit a LOCAL SCHOOL in Peguche to visit with Ecuadorian children. Enjoy lunch at a local hacienda before returning to Quito. (B,L)

Day 8: QUITO-COTAPAXI-BAÑOS.
Journey south with your Local Host, passing the Avenue of the Volcanoes to visit COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK, a highland zone protected since 1975. On a walk near Lake Limpiopungo, you will have the chance to learn about the typical vegetation and fauna found in the area. Enjoy breathtaking views of Cotapaxi Volcano, rising more than 19,000 feet. Next, visit a ROSE PLANTATION, where you can observe the cultivation and harvest of this important export and witness the exceptional beauty of the Ecuadorian rose. Continue to Baños, known for its famous hot springs that give the area its name. Relax in the mild mountain climate at one of the HOT SPRINGS at your hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 9: BAÑOS-RIOBAMBA.
You'll have time this morning to view some of Baños' impressive waterfalls before heading to Riobamba in the shadow of Ecuador's highest volcano, Chimborazo, surpassing 20,000 feet in altitude. (B,D)

Day 10: RIOBAMBA-CUENCA.
An unforgettable TRAIN TRIP takes you over the almost-vertical wall of rock called the Devil's Nose. This engineering marvel allows the train to transit a zigzag path cut into the mountainside that ascends and descends more than 3,000 feet. Continue to Cuenca with your Local Host, stopping at the INGAPIRCA RUINS, Ecuador's most important monument of pre-Spanish culture. The ruins are located on a grass-covered hill once used as a sun-worshiping temple. Even before the construction of the Sun Temple (1450-1480), this place held important spiritual significance for the Incas. On a walk through the ruins, learn about Inca beliefs, rituals, and how they built the puma-shaped temple. (B,L,D)

Day 11: CUENCA.
Enjoy a PRIVATE GUIDED TOUR of Cuenca, the third-largest city in Ecuador and considered one of the most beautiful. See the historical buildings along the Tomebamba River, the Todos los Santos ruins, the flower market, and the main square with the old and new cathedral. Afterward, visit a PANAMA HAT FACTORY and a POTTERY STUDIO, where you can learn more about the work of the local people. (B,L)

Day 12: CUENCA-GUAYAQUIL.
Transfer with your Local Host to the coastal town of Guayaquil, stopping along the way to visit a CACAO PLANTATION. Learn about the cultivation of the cacao fruit, harvesting, and the processing of this important industry for Ecuador. On to Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest and most industrial city and the key to Ecuador's trade center. The rest of your day is at leisure to explore the city. (B)

Day 13: GUAYAQUIL-BALTRA (EMBARKATION)-GALÁPAGOS CRUISING: SANTA CRUZ ISLAND
Fly to the Galápagos Islands and board the Santa Cruz II. Visit Las Bachas on SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, an important nesting area for the East Pacific green sea turtle. See brackish lagoons just steps away from the sea, a feeding ground for various wading birds—from stilts to flamingos. (B,L,D)

Day 14: CRUISING: SANTIAGO ISLAND.
Arrive at Buccaneer Cove on SANTIAGO ISLAND to explore the dramatic coastline inhabited by a large number of marine birds, sea lions, and inter-tidal organisms. You will also have the opportunity to snorkel and take a ride on the panga or the glass-bottom boat. Later, at Puerto Egas, -known for its black-sand beach, tuff-stone layers and lava flows,- see land and marine birds, as well as a colony of fur sea lions, marine iguanas, and marine turtles. (B,L,D)

Day 15: CRUISING: RÁBIDA & BARTOLOMÉ ISLANDS
Visit RÁBIDA ISLAND with its red-colored beach, caused by the unusually high content of iron in the volcanic material. Your Naturalist will point out large colonies of sea lions, marine iguanas, mockingbirds, yellow warblers, and several species of Darwin's finches. Very close to the beach, a salt pond occasionally hosts American flamingos. Snorkel from the beach to see the unique combination of underwater species and submarine landscapes. At BARTOLOMÉ ISLAND, hike to the summit for a stunning view of Pinnacle Rock. Take a snorkel or a ride on the glass-bottom boat and possibly see Galápagos penguins in tropical waters! (B,L,D)

Day 16: CRUISING: GENOVESA ISLAND
On GENOVESA ISLAND, take a walk up Prince Phillip's Steps as your Naturalist reveals large colonies of masked boobies, blue- and red-footed boobies, frigatebirds, storm petrels, and short-eared owls. Return to the beach for snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming. (B,L,D)

Hygiene and Safety Protocols for Monograms Tours

Today's world has changed, but what remains certain is Monograms' commitment to guest safety, comfort and peace-of-mind while traveling with us. To that end, Monograms has established a worldwide Assurance program, with enhanced on-trip protocols and procedures, to ensure the health – and happiness – of guests throughout their travels with us.

It all starts with Monograms' Global Health & Safety Team, dedicated to ensuring that cleanliness of all operations exceeds today’s travel standards—from start to finish. The following areas address Monograms' commitment to providing a safe and clean environment for guests.

A SAFE & WARM WELCOME

Monograms will enact new tour check-in procedures and pre-trip health screenings to offer guests a safe start to their journey, including adherence to social distancing requirements.

BLENDING CULTURAL PROXIMITY WITH SOCIAL DISTANCE

Monograms will ensure safe distances for guests throughout the journey, on coach and during excursions. This includes providing masks for guests use at any time where social proximity could be an issue as well as the possibility of reducing group sizes, if required. And wireless listening technology – including Monograms' Go Beyond Devices in Europe – enables safe distances between guests and other travelers on excursions.

FOCUS ON GUEST AND TEAM MEMBER HEALTH

To ensure a healthy environment for team and guests, Monograms will conduct regular temperature checks for both guests and team, and when necessary, masks will be worn by Monograms' team members when with guests.

TOUCHING HEARTS, NOT HANDS

Traveling with Monograms removes many of the “touch points” of travel, including luggage handling, check in/out, expedited entry into attractions and more. Monograms are further reducing risk with hands-free service, meaning all self-services replaced by staff, including buffet meals replaced with table service. Monograms will also ensure hand sanitizing is available throughout each trip, on coach and in hotels.

COMMITMENT TO CLEAN

As a part of Monograms' commitment to clean, Monograms is requiring enhanced cleaning procedures with hotel partners, on motorcoaches, vehicles and throughout every trip, including additional daily disinfecting procedures that go above-and-beyond already strict health and safety procedures.

PARTNERS IN DISCOVERY AND IN HEALTH

Monograms has strict health and safety protocols, which have been in place for years, focused on ensuring all aspects of operation- from vehicles and equipment used on trip to excursions and hotel procedures. This process will continue with new, elevated health and safety checks, to maintain their promise that each touch-point on tours and cruises are considered in their commitment to guest and team member well-being.

Questions & Answers

Question: How many suitcases can I take with me on my trip?

Each person is allowed one "check-in," and one "carry-on." Remember to take all valuables with you as "carry-on", because electronic equipment, cameras, laptops, jewelry, business documents and money are not covered by the airlines' liability, so always carry them aboard with you.

Question: Is Airfare Included in the Price?

Airfare from your point of origin to and from the trip is not included in the land price.

It was an amazing trip with fantastic local guides in every location.

Excellent services, reliable, informative, friendly

Our trip was wonderful. Everything that was offered was provided. The local hosts were great and professional.

The travel consultants are knowlegeable about tour details and do a great job matching customer needs with the right tour.

Monograms was just the right mix for us. City tours and transportation were great - but we enjoyed the flexibility of going out and seeing what we wanted to see at our own pace.

Outstanding service and organized. Would recommend to anyone.

I wouldn't change a thing. From start to finish-professional advice and detailed explanation of what to expect-a great adventure!

The Monograms local host system worked like clockwork. They were there as scheduled and took the worry out of flight, hotel, and tour transfers.

A trip that I found to be a nightmare to try and plan on my own was made so easy by having Marianne take charge and make all of the arrangements. I had been searching on line, had met with a local travel agent, and was overwhelmed and really getting nowhere. I was ready to give up on my trip planning, stumbled across finding Marianne, and suddenly she made the seemingly impossible happen with no problems! Without her expertise guiding me along and handling the arrangements, I have no doubt that this trip would not have happened. As for the trip: Monograms did a superb job with putting their package together. It more than exceeded my expectations. this will undoubtedly rank as one of my best trips EVER.

Monograms was fantastic. We were independant and did not use them for many of the excursions but they were very helpful for first day orientation, suggestions and were available throughout for any questions. The included half day tours were very good. If you wanted to have everything arranged for you instead of being independant there were many good excursions to choose from.

Very well organized tour, knowledgeable guides. Have a wonderful time.

Monograms was wonderful! Everything was just as they promised. The travel was easy, there were no surprises, it was a stress-free vacation! Having the local host available was great. They were all valuable.

This is our third trip booked with Trena through Affordable Tours using the Globus company. The trip went off without a single glitch from flights to airport transfers to hotel.

Monograms, for the most part, was great We loved the "independent tour" format which gave us much more flexibility with our time in each place we visited. The local hosts were great-some better for us than others--but very helpful. The city tours which were provided varied in quality but usually gave a good overview of the city. A couple of our hotels were not as good as others (construction in progress, smaller rooms or breakfast not as comprehensive) but all were clean and adequate. Two of our flights were changed by the airlines, but the transportation contracted by Monograms did not get the change (schedule change occurred weeks before we left the US for our trip) so did not arrive to take us to the airport. Thank goodness for Uber!

The hotels were wonderful, I can't complain about that.
