Experience the stunning landscapes that lemurs call home on this 21-day in-depth tour through Madagascar's best sites and natural settings. At the Indri Special Reserve in Andasibe-Perinet National Park, you can spot rare species like large chameleons, the blue boa, and flowering orchids in October and November. Stop at the Anja Community Reserve, known for its ring-tailed lemurs, before driving through beautiful desert landscapes to reach the beautiful beaches of Ifaty. In between, you'll meet and chat with locals and learn about their artistic traditions and ways of life for a better appreciation of the land you're visiting.

Arrive at any time.

Day 2: Antananarivo/Andasibe
Travel to Andasibe-Perinet National Park with scenic stops en route. Stay in a quiet area near Andasibe and explore the Indri Special Reserve section of this massive area.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Free Time: Spend time visit nearby reserves or relaxing in the forest.

Day 3: Andasibe
Spend the day exploring this national park. Stay in a quiet area near Andasibe and explore the Indri Special Reserve section of this massive area.
Activity: Explore the Indri Special Reserve and national park located 1.5km (0.93 mi) from the town of Andasibe. One of the park's primary purposes is to protect the natural habitat of the indri, a large black and white diurnal species that feeds on leaves and fruit. In addition to the indri, the park has 10 other diurnal and nocturnal lemur species, large chameleons, and the rarely seen blue boa. The flora is just as spectacular with numerous species of trees, palms, and orchids (which flower in October/November).

Day 4: Andasibe/Antsirabe
Travel to the colonial city of Antsirabe, stopping to see rice paddies along the way.
Transport: Stop to visit some highlights along the way.

Day 5: Antsirabe/Fiadanana
Visit Lake Andraikiba before continuing to the small village of Fiadanana. Opt to explore this beautiful village. Listen to a ghost talker, enjoy a stay at a community guesthouse, and dinner with a local family.
Activity: Enjoy the views of beautiful Lake Andraikiba.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Transport: Lace up your shoes and get to the next stop under your own power.
Activity: Listen to a ghost talker to learn more about traditional healing and local legends.
Activity: Get to know how the villagers live by interacting with them and enjoy a chance to learn their rituals during an authentic community experience. While the accommodation was purpose-built to make room for guests, the building was prepared in a traditional style and still offers the interaction of staying in a typical family home.

Day 6: Fiadanana/Ranomafana
Learn traditional rituals from the local villagers. Hike back to the bus taking in the stunning views. Continue on to Ranomafana.

Day 7: Ranomafana/Ambalavao
Opt for an early morning forest walk to get a feel for the incredible wildlife of the area, or explore on your own. In the afternoon, enjoy a scenic journey heading south through Madagascar's wine-producing region.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Ambalavao is famous for its "Papier Antemoro", a papyrus-type paper impregnated with dried flowers and sold throughout the island. Visit a little paper factory where the locals will tell us about the traditional methods used to produce this unique, hand-made paper. You can even buy some and use it to write letters to your friends and family back home.

Day 8: Ambalavao/Ranohira
Stop at Anja Community Reserve, known for groups of ring-tailed lemurs. Continue on through the ever-changing landscape to Ranohira and Isalo National Park.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Stop at the Anja Community Reserve, which known for having some of the most accessible groups of ring-tailed lemurs in the country. Enjoy looking at these fascinating creatures.

Day 9: Ranohira
Spend the day exploring Isalo National park on foot, stopping at a natural swimming pool and waterfalls. In the evening visit the G Adventures supported tree planting project near Ranohira, creating a green corridor to protect the biodiversity of Isalo National Park.
Activity: Spend a full day exploring this fantastic park on foot. After a short trek within a small canyon, take a break from the sun and stop at a fresh natural swimming pool. We continue on to the "cascades", which are considered to be amongst the best waterfalls in Madagascar and boasts a large natural swimming pool. If you are lucky, you may see sifaka, brown lemurs, or ring-tailed lemurs. Between September and October (in the most arid zones), you can witness the pachypodium blooms.
Activity: Help address one of Madagascar's biggest environmental concerns during today's tree planting activity. You'll learn about why deforestation is such a big problem in Madagascar, how it threatens to wipe out the country's unique biodiversity, and what we can do to stop it. Get hands-on as you plant indigenous trees alongside the rest of the group as part of a project initiated by local organization Soa Zara, who are working to protect the environment around the town of Ranohira through tree planting, conservation education, sanitation projects, and other initiatives.

Day 10: Ranohira/Ifaty
Drive through the desert landscape, viewing Mahafaly tombs and giant baobab trees en route. Continue to the beautiful Mozambican Channel beaches of Ifaty.
Transport: Make stops along the way to spot baobab trees and visit the Mahafaly tombs.

Day 11: Ifaty
Spend two full days enjoying this gorgeous area. Opt to do some hiking or hit the beach.

Day 13: Ifaty/Antananarivo
Travel to Toliara for a flight to Antananarivo and an optional last night out on the town.

Day 14: Antananarivo/Antsiranana
Fly to Antsiranana and meet your group for second part of the tour.

Activity: You may be a seasoned pro at group travel by now, but there will likely be some new travellers joining the group. Sit in on the welcome meeting to meet the newest members of your group and learn about the next leg of your tour.

Day 15: Amber Mountain National Park
Drive to Amber Mountains National Park, with a full day to explore the various forest trails. Watch for lemurs, birds and reptiles and marvel at the many waterfalls and volcanic lakes.

Activity: Created in 1958, Montagne D'Ambre National Park was the first national park in Madagascar. This impressive park in northern Madagascar is one of the most diverse parks on the island, and is home to 25 species of mammal, 60 reptiles, and over 70 bird species. The day is spent exploring the tropical forests and tranquil waterfalls on a network of walking trails. Keep a look out for the ever present lemurs, but also some of the smaller inhabitants, including geckos, chameleons and butterflies.

Day 16: Amber Mountain/Ankarana Reserve
Continue on to Ankarana Reserve, home to spectacular limestone 'tsingy' rock formations, underground rivers and sacred caves.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Explore the varied terrain in one of Madagascar's most rewarding hiking destinations. From patches of dense tropical jungle, to deep caves, canyons and the large limestone spires, known as 'tsingy', there are a variety of trails taking you deep into the park. The reserve is also home to a wide variety of lemurs, including the crowned lemur, and many reptile, frog and bird species.

Head out on a local pirogue to explore 'the lemur island' Nosy Komba, and the underwater paradise of Nosy Tanikely, a marine reserve.

Activity: Located between Nosy Be and the mainland, Nosy Komba and Nosy Tanikely are famous for their beautiful beaches, shallow corals and teeming wildlife, both on land and in the water. Explore the quaint fishing villages of Nosy Komba, and venture into the forest to see the resident black lemurs, before diving into the clear waters surrounding Nosy Tanikely. Perfect for snorkelling, the clear, warm waters are alive with tropical fish, stingrays and turtles.

Where you'll be staying safe

G Adventures has always carefully selected accommodation partners for high standards and local roots. Travelling in small groups means that the stay is in smaller hotels too, with fewer guests — which means less daily contact with others outside your group in public spaces. Now G Adventures is working with accommodation partners to optimize their health, safety and cleanliness procedures, as well as creating additional measures for physical distancing. Here are some of the things G Adventures is working on to help keep you safe:

  • Daily deep cleaning and disinfecting of all surface areas inside your room with extra cleaning on light switches, door handles, TV remotes, and thermostats
  • No hotel staff will enter your room after it has been cleaned
  • Increased frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of all public restrooms and all surfaces in public areas. This might include the closure of public spaces such as gyms, bars, restaurants, and meeting rooms for periods throughout the day
  • Wherever possible, groups will stay on the lower floors to limit elevator use
  • Hotels will implement social distancing protocols in line with local regulations

A good & safe place to eat

G Adventures has always carefully selected food service partners and worked closely with them to ensure they are meeting health, safety, and cleanliness standards with their facilities, staff training, and food preparation and delivery. Wherever possible, G Adventures will reserve separate tables or private rooms at the restaurants visited on the trip, opt for more "al fresco" opportunities when it is possible (gotta love that fresh air!), and ensure breakfasts can be "grab and go" boxes, while avoiding family style or self-serve buffets for meals. G Adventures wants you to feel comfortable and safe as you savour every last bite.

Activities

You've always had freedom and flexibility to do your own thing on tours with optional activities and experiences. Now, you'll still have those options with added measures to keep you healthy and safe. All equipment for activities on tour, including hiking poles, camping supplies, life jackets, snorkels, etc., will be cleaned thoroughly at least once a day and disinfected between use. When travellers are responsible for putting up their own tents on camping itineraries, you will be given the supplies required to disinfect your gear. G Adventures will also do their best to make activities and highlights stops happen during non-peak hours, so you can have fun and feel safe no matter what you're doing.
