From the rich history of Germany to the unique culture of Hungary, this Danube river cruise takes you to three countries, and the scenic beauty as you cruise past quaint towns, can be experienced right from your stateroom or atop the sky deck of your ship. In Nuremberg, Germany, board your river cruise vessel docked on the Main Danube Canal and visit this thousand-year-old city with a Local Guide. Next, reach Regensburg, the only German city not bombed during WWII. Lovers of architecture will enjoy the many listed buildings of historic interest, and Porta Pretoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. And here you’ll taste local sausages at one of Germany’s oldest restaurants and we’ll introduce you to some of Germany’s famous beers. Next stop is Passau, known for its narrow winding streets lined with Patrician houses, and the magnificent Italian baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In Melk, you will visit Austria’s majestic Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe’s largest monasteries, which sits high on a bluff. Take in the breathtaking views before continuing through the picturesque Wachau Valley to the romantic sounds of Vienna, the “City of Music.” Your European river cruise vacation ends in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

The river cruise was wonderful. Unfortunately the river was too low for us to dock to Nuremberg, Roth and Budapest. Our cruise director Valentin had to make major accomodations for these glitches which he did wonderfully. Avalon Cruise Lines will be refunding some money because of these changes, which was very unexpected but shows what a responsible company they are. Our city tours had knowledgeable and easy to understand guides. .
2nd crusie with Avalon (Rhine/Moselle in late September and Prague to Budapest in late May). For Legendary Danube, recommend sailing from Prague to Budapest rather than reverse direction as it's a better build of experiences - Budapest is wonderful ending to journey. We were on Avalon's newest ship, Envision and like our previous boat,there are numerous public spaces with excellent viewing and cabin/bath size generous compared to competition. Food is very good with the lunch buffet and afternoon tea and cake being highlights. Wait staff is excellent as is the entire crew. We've had very knowledgeable cruise directors on both cruises who handled itinerary changes due to water levels professionally and with a sense of humor. The local guides are some of the best we've experienced in Europe. We will definitely cruise with Avalon again.
I'm glad we did not pay for the balcony room since it was low tide, the ship was docked most of the time. The bad part was the windows in our room (left /port side) was always a foot away from the port wall every time the ship is docked. Something to consider which sides you want to see when docked ,The street (or wall) or the water view . They did not switch sides, we were always on the wall. On Big Cruise Ships, port or starboard side is about the same.
Everything about this trip went smoothly. All the staff whether during booking, at the hotel or on the ship were very helpful, and courteous. This was our third trip booked through Affordable Tours and Globus (Avalon Waterways), and I can foresee another trip next year, possibly Italy? Thanks, to all who helped make this so effortless and enjoyable.
