Itinerary

Tour Itinerary

Escape to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, reachable only by air or water, to explore Tortuguero National Park. As its name suggests, it is here where sea turtles like loggerheads and leatherbacks lay their eggs each year. Visit the Sea Turtle Conservancy, home to the Western Hemisphere’s largest green sea turtle nursery. Cruise the canals to spot fantastic creatures large and small that stalk, slither, and soar in this natural paradise of wildlife diversity. Depart by boat before driving to San José and pass pineapple and banana groves en route to the heart-stirring rainforest canopies of Arenal. Here, the hanging bridges stretch to heart-stirring heights through the rainforest canopy, while the depths of the earth deliver lava trails to follow. See Arenal Volcano and explore the wild places where pumas and jaguars prowl. Look skyward to spot the hundreds of multi-hued birds, butterflies, and a dizzying diversity of wildlife in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Find your head in the clouds in a primeval forest blessed by trade winds, rain, and fog by day, and unfettered stars above by night. Go where monkeys and macaws make your day with mischief and count yourself charmed to see some of the 160-plus reptile species—from tiny amphibians to titan snakes. Get civilized too, with visits to an artisan village and a tour of Costa Rica’s largest city and cultural capital of San José.

I have listed in my comments below some of my frustrations with my recent trip to Costa Rica. Our hotel in Monteverde were below par for Globus. There was not enough hot water for all the guests to shower and the bedspreads looked like they had not been cleaned in a long time. The other hotels were nice with the best being the Evergreen Lodge, that was a true Costa Rica resort and we were so happy we had gone there.

Based on having traveled with Globus in the past on two other guided tours, this tour did not meet the expectations we had for this company. If this had been our first experience with Globus, we would never travel with them again. Since we did not see anyone from Globus at the hotel, we did not get any orientation information especially where safety was concerned. San Jose is known for petty theft especially where thieves grab people's necklaces from their necks and run. This happened to my husband and to a Globus guest so that information should have been given to us and such information has been given on past Globus tours. We did not realize until the second day that no one else from Globus was in Tortuguero with us despite the fact that this entire trip was a complete Globus tour and not an add on feature. We were never met at the hotel by a representative from Globus and only received a paper explaining that we would meet our transfer the next morning at a specific time. We were placed on a transfer bus that was musty and not clean. The bus made several stops along the way and at one point stopped on the highway when the driver and tour director got off for about 15 minutes. We were never told why. Breakfast was provided on the way and was very good but we were only given about 20 minutes to eat and put back on the bus. Once we got to the dock for transfer to the park, the boat ride was fine. The resort was nice but we were still confused why we did not see others from Globus. Returning to San Jose, we were on the same musty bus and had to wait a good 45 minutes at the dock to get the bus back to San Jose. This again was an all day trip. At one point when the 4 of us Globus guests were the only ones left on the bus, it stopped on the side of a highway to transfer us to another bus which they said was smaller. It was the same size. We had to take our own luggage out of one bus and drag it to the next bus with little room to roll the suitcase along the highway. When we returned to the hotel to prepare for the next day's journey to Monteverde, there were no instructions for us as to when to meet the group. The front desk had no information. There was no posted information from Globus and sending an email to Karen did not get a response. We also left a message for the Globus tour director Jorge. We looked through some papers received at the airport and found the name of the Costa Rican travel agency representing Globus and finally received information only after calling them. We should not have had to search for the information. Once on the Globus tour bus, the tour guide was excellent and the excursions were very good. All the accomodations were good except for the Monteverde Country Lodge. The food, staff, and drinks were excellent but the hotel did not have enough hot water for showers. Both of our showers were cold each day. The sheets were old and scratchy and the mattress looked old. The hotels in Arenal and Tortuguero were wonderful. Our expectations for a Globus trip were not met on this trip.
