Day 2
Vatican City and Rome with a LocalThe day is devoted to the Eternal City. Join a Local Expert for an in-depth visit to the Vatican Museums, full of priceless art treasures collected by the Popes. Visit the Sistine Chapel, where Popes are elected, to admire Michelangelo’s famous ceiling and see St. Peter’s Basilica. Cross the Tiber river to enjoy ancient Rome. See the incredible Circus Maximus and the beautifully preserved Arch of Constantine, and imagine the bustling ancient sidewalk of ancient Rome. Ancient Pompeii and on to SorrentoJourney to the ill-fated town of Pompeii, frozen in time when it was engulfed by an eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Then continue to your hotel on the spectacular Sorrento Peninsular. The tour guide, Remi Gosselin, was superb and Enzo, our driver, was incredible. They were professional, knowledgeable, accommodating, and very thoughtful. For instance, when we did the gondola ride in Venice, Remi arranged for us to be serenaded. The musicians sang popular songs we recognized and it turned into a sing-along. The locals may not have enjoyed us but we had a great time. I still marvel at Enzo's driving. I would never have attempted to get a bus in some of the places he negotiated with seeming ease. And never once did he make a wrong turn.
