DAY 3, Monday - Venice City Tour
The discovery of Venice begins with a boat ride to the island of Murano, known for its artistic and colorful glassware. Visit one of the factories to witness the art of glassblowing. Afterward, continue to the main Venice island and take a walking tour with your local guide through the maze of narrow alleyways and bridges before reaching St. Mark's Square. Upon arrival, view its most prominent monuments including the Bridge of Sighs, the pink marble Doge's Palace, and golden Basilica of San Marco, one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It was built over several centuries in a fusion of Byzantine, Roman, and Venetian architecture. DAY 6, Thursday - Medieval Assisi City Tour en route to Rome
Depart Florence and venture on to the quaint medieval town of Assisi, perched high on a hill in the Umbria region with its rugged, winding streets and sacred shrines. Upon arrival, join your local guide for a walking tour of Assisi, best known as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy. The town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its significant art and architecture. Its main attraction is the 13th century Basilica di San Francesco, an artistic highlight of medieval Europe containing the sacred relics of St. Francis and Giotto's frescoes. DAY 9, Sunday - Pompeii Excursion
Depart Rome this morning on a full day excursion to Pompeii. Drive along the Sun Route motorway through the scenic regions of Lazio and Campania, rich in astonishing natural beauty. At a distance, you can view the Abbey of Montecassino perched high on the mountaintop (weather permitting). This was the scene of a huge battle near the end of World War II in which the abbey was completely destroyed, but has since been restored. As you pass the Bay of Naples, majestic Mt. Vesuvius marks the way to Pompeii, the city that was frozen in time under a thick carpet of volcanic ash almost 2,000 years ago. Explore Pompeii's original streets with its winding alleyways, steps and inclines. View the tragic fossils of people attempting to escape beside their children and dogs, along with the preserved ruins of the Temples of Apollo and Jupiter, and the Forum. I was very happy with the Tour Manager and Driver. I would definitely book another tour with Gate 1 Travel.
My husband and I enjoyed our latest Gate 1 trip. Our guide Meme was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. She was well organized, and took care in attending to our groups needs including appropriately timed rest stops. Many of the hotels on this trip were among the nicest I’ve ever stayed in including the Wagner in Triana and the Hilton in Montenegro. My only criticism of the trip is the restaurants used for our group dinners. At best they were very mediocre. Breakfasts at the hotels were fine.

Fine trip for the most part. Good pace and time management, except for Neuschwanstein where another half hour would have enabled us to make it to the bridge overview for best pictures. First two hotels air-conditioning was not working, problematic for me keeping prescription eyedrops cool. Other than that, I\'d appreciate help in being able to choose from available flight options, and selecting seats with better/cabin leg room. Thanks!

Speaking for my wife and I, we are of the age where we need slower guided tours. For example, we would be with the local guide and they would point out various shops, etc., but we would not be able to stop until the end of tour. We could not remember how to back track and find our way back in time.

Rui Miguel, tour guide could not have been a better match for the group of experienced travelers which made our group. Knowledgeable, professional, and humorous. Passionate about his country, his work and enjoyable to be around. Likewise the 2 other city guides, Pedro (Lisbon) and Marta (Porto). These tour guides were all cracked out of the same egg. Excellent!!! We have toured with two other companies. Gate 1 has something the others do not. Exceptional guides, exceptional communication, and exceptional itineraries which are affordable and fair. Because we choose to travel off season or shoulder I feel we get the best of all worlds. I always feel that we got the best we could at a price we were happy to pay. I have referred many to Gate 1. I will continue. (No, I did not collect a referral fee; they failed to mention, but they have all become Gate 1 travelers). Suggestions on the Affordable Portugal Itinerary: *Shorten Lisbon stay to 2 nights to allow personal time in Tomar or Porto. *Change "Bed options" in booking. It is not to my liking, as well as those we chatted with, to have to request a bed type at check in. I would like to preface this concern with the fact that the check-in rep was lovely, kind, and well spoken. The compaint: A tour reservation, (although many hotels do same thing),bed preference should be known and booked at time of booking. Our room, (we checked in at 3PM) was offered at twin, request was made for queen/double at desk. The request was given to a desk manager, then to the front Supervisor. Finally 15 minutes later with the desk lined up with check-ins were told "ok" and were told it was a very quiet room, in which we were most pleased. No, it was NOT a quiet room. Room 410 and those along that corridor were very noisy. EXTREMELY! Air conditioners/recycling bottle dump at 2AM/trash trucks/voices. Not a good sleeping experience at the Hotel Mondial. Others experienced same and mentioned as casual chit-chat.
Everyone loved our Tour Director, Jared, who was very competent and professional with a great sense of humor. We were lucky to have such a compatible large group of congenial and friendly people from all over the U.S. and a few from Canada.. The hotels, whether new and deluxe or in historic haciendas, exceeded our expectations as did the fully-packed itinerary of enjoyable museum and home visits, activities.
The trip was much more than i expected. Even though we had a relatively large group all activities ran very smoothly. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative. He answered questions easily and thoroughly. Several stops on the tour showed the life of the Turkish people.
