There is a unique charm to the winters of Central Europe, made even more special during the Christmas season. I wanted to experience this special place and time so I opted to travel with my father on Christmas Time on the Danube with Avalon cruise that visited some of these romantic places. This was my first river cruise experience and I now think that it’s THE way to travel.
Our tour and cruise began in Vienna where, on our first morning in Vienna, we joined a walking tour of the city. In the afternoon, my dad and I went to the childhood home of Marie Antoinette, the beautiful Schonbrunn Palace. There was a Christmas market around the palace and out of all the markets we went to, it had the most beautiful glass ornaments.
In medieval Regensburg, we went to the “oldest fast food restaurant” in the world. The restaurant is over 500 years old, and, reputedly, it was started because the medieval bridge workers needed a quick and cheap way to get food. That afternoon, Avalon drove us to one of the most romantic Christmas markets in Germany. This Christmas market was located on the grounds of a medieval castle and it was by far my favorite!

Our floating hotel was maintained beautifully and we were served by an experienced and caring crew. Meals were all first rate and the onboard services were carried out flawlessly. Though not featuring the kind of nightlife one would expect on super ships sailing the oceans, the intimate atmosphere and lower-key entertainment aboard our ship was a perfect complement to the brisk outside and toasty-warm inside that we enjoyed aboard during on our nights on the river.

Once we got to Nuremberg, my dad and I took a break from the markets and ventured out to the World War II grounds. They are a somber reminder of a different time and place but nonetheless remarkably interesting.
I would definitely recommend Christmas time on the Danube with Avalon Waterways to anyone who wants to experience the delights of Europe in the winter.
