You learn why the windmills were built and see how they work, plus you enter a working windmill for a tour of its mechanisms and living quarters. Return on board for lunch and an enjoyable afternoon of Dutch diversions: sample handcrafted Dutch cheeses and jenever, a distilled juniper liquor, and take in a culturally enriching presentation on the Dutch Golden Age. Begin your day with a morning tour of Cologne, Germany's fourth largest city. Stroll through Old Town past St. Martin's Church and see the Dom, Germany's largest cathedral and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend your free time enjoying Cologne's atmospheric waterfront, or perhaps join an optional excursion on which you ascend to the Dom's roof for up-close views of the cathedral's architecture and bird's-eye vistas of Cologne. Afterward, return on board for dinner. Alternately, you may set off on an optional excursion to explore Cologne's spirited beer culture, sampling Kölsch, a light, crisp beer brewed only in Cologne, and enjoying a brauhaus dinner. Proceed along the Rhine, disembarking for a walking tour of Koblenz. After lunch on board, sail the scenic Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where turreted castles and fortresses overlook the river from their hilltop posts. Arrive in Rüdesheim in the late afternoon. Spend free time in the pedestrian-only Drosselgasse and sample a glass of locally produced wine at one of the restaurants or wine bars. Cruise into midmorning as you enjoy the passing scenery. After lunch, enjoy an included tour to visit the historic town of Speyer and take in views of the imposing Speyer Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 11th century on the site of a former basilica, the building's design influenced Romanesque architecture for centuries to come, and is the final resting place of eight German monarchs. Alternatively, after breakfast, you may choose to disembark for a full day tour of Heidelberg, the home of Germany's oldest university, founded in 1386. Visit the beautiful sandstone ruins of imposing Heidelberg Castle and admire the Neckar River Valley. Continue with a walking tour through Old Town to Heidelberg's renowned gates. After lunch, visit the historic town of Speyer on your way back to your ship. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Pre-Departure Test
To ensure your journey is smooth and that you are able to fully enjoy your voyage as planned, we highly recommend that all guests take a pre-departure COVID-19 test, no more than three days prior to beginning your journey.
Purified Air
Enjoy fresh air in your stateroom, knowing that all staterooms on Viking river ships feature independent air handling units that do not share air with other areas of the ship. Take comfort in knowing that the air in the public areas of your ship has also been purified with new short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) lights and high-density filters, which kill 99.99% of all airborne viruses and bacteria.
Medical Services
While every precaution can reduce the risk of illness, we are also prepared for that outcome. Each of our vessels has always had a state-of-the-art Medical Center; those facilities have now been upgraded with more specialized equipment. We have also launched a new 24/7 hotline staffed by doctors, specifically for our river cruises.
Sanitization
Rest assured that the surfaces on your ship will be cleaned and sanitized continuously with daily scheduled deep cleanings. You will notice more hand sanitization stations throughout your ship. And on our ocean and expedition ships, we are using new sanitization robots that utilize UV-C light to treat surfaces in guest and crew public areas—an industry first.
Dining & Entertainment
On your ship, you can expect spacious, airy public areas and abundant options for al fresco dining. Also, on our ocean voyages, as always, you can enjoy complimentary 24-hour room service. Now, more options for spaced seating in all dining venues will allow for physical distancing; there will be additional table service at all bars and lounges; and new capabilities will allow you to watch more live events and enriching content through your in-room entertainment system.
Physical Distancing & Face Masks
Public health experts agree that proper physical distancing and the use of face masks are effective in helping slow the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses. Face masks are optional while moving about the ship. Please note: Viking’s Medical Team continually monitors conditions and may deem face masks to be necessary while moving about the ship, based on conditions at the time of travel. While ashore, guests will need to comply with any local guidelines for face masks and physical distancing. Face masks continue to be required for all crew.
Local Partner Training

Yes, the river cruise itineraries may change due to reasons such as inclement weather or unforeseen events. Your safety is the number one concern aboard and all precautions necessary will be taken in order to ensure passenger safety, including changing itineraries. Please note that when itineraries do change, the ship staff will do their best to substitute any missed port with an alternative destination.

Pricy with limited entertainment but food and excursions were outstanding.
Our experience with affordable tours and with Viking itself was a very pleasurable experience. Everything we were promised was delivered, the cruise was exceptional and the Viking crew and staff took care of our every need. I would not hesitate to take another cruise with them and use Affordable Tours as our agent, in fact we are looking at other cruise destinations that we are interested in booking. The entire experience was exceptional.
We've been on two Viking river cruises so far. Stayed in an Explorer Suite both times. Viking has figured out how to pack maximum enjoyment considering customer preferences for how much guided tour time and on your own time you desire at each stop. They are highly organized and highly trained. Their staff are very friendly and it rubs off on their customers. And the food is excellent. We'll book again.
Although Viking provided high quality experience in every way, having to do part of our journey by bus rather than boat was disappointing. Having to pack and unpack in order to change boats was a bit frustrating. I realize that Viking cannot control the water depth of the rivers, but because of this experience I am not anxious to make another river cruise. I may be more inclined to choose an ocean cruise where water depth is most likely not a problem.
Viking is wonderful. We had to have a boat change at the beginning because of water level issues, but the cruise was seamless. Viking is a class operation in every sense.
This was our first Viking cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to future cruises with Viking.
Our Viking Rhine River cruise was wonderful. This is our second Viking river cruise and it was everything we hoped for and exceeded our expectations. The new longships are beautiful, our French balcony cabin was great, the food on the ship was delicious, and our included tours were educational and informative. I would highly recommend Viking cruises.

The Viking Rhine river cruise was far above my expectations. Viking Eir staff was professional, friendly, fun and accommodating. The meals were fabulous. The shore excursions were great. The weather was awesome. A river cruise should be a must on anyone's bucket list, and definitely book Viking. Saw several river cruise lines, but the ships didn't match up to Viking. Viking has their own buses for the first four stops. This company is certainly very professional. The nightly activities in the lounge after dinner were great.
