River Cruise Itinerary

Take an extraordinary journey on this escorted tour of Egypt, beginning and ending in Cairo, followed by a 4-night stay in Jordan. Begin with a 3-night stay in Cairo—called the “Mother of the World”—to explore the legendary sites you’ve dreamed of seeing. Stand before the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Giza and Sakkara’s tombs of the kings. Survey King Tutankhamun's treasures at the Egyptian Museum (note: upon its opening, the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza will replace Cairo’s Egyptian Museum in this itinerary.)In Old Cairo, visit the Alabaster Mosque, situated on the summit of the Citadel. Visit Abu Serga Church built on the spot where the Holy Family stopped and rested towards the end of their journey to Egypt. Also see the 4th century Church of the Virgin Mary (called the Hanging Church), built on the remains of an old Roman Babylon fortress. These and more exciting discoveries are to be found as you see Egypt’s incredible monuments to pharaohs and gods of Egyptian history.Fly to Luxor to embark on your Nile River cruise. You’ll visit the monument of Karnak with its ancient Avenue of the Sphinxes and the Temple of Amun-Ra as well as Luxor Temple. Visit the valley of Kings and Valley of Queens, where the pristine tomb of King Tutankahmun was found with undisturbed riches and splendor. This incredible cruise on the Nile River takes you to amazing ancient sites, including the Temple of Edfu, twin temples at Kom Ombo, devoted to the crocodile god Sobek-Ra and the falcon god Horus. Ponder the magnitude of the task of building the pyramids with a visit to the granite quarries—where an unfinished obelisk still remains. Visit the Temple of Isis, then take a return flight to Cairo to explore the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and its Hall of Mummies before a felucca ride on the Nile and the chance to browse the bustling maze of the endless bazaar in Cairo’s medieval alleys. Your adventure continues with four nights in Jordan, with a flight from Cairo to Amman. Spend one night each in Amman and Petra, and two nights at the Dead Sea. Enjoy superior accommodations, transportation, and guided sightseeing with expert Local Guides to see the red city of Petra, Roman ruins of Amman, the ruins of Jerash, and the Dead Sea.

Avalon is as good as it gets. Perfect in pretty much everything. Pretty astounding what a great job they do. will book them again. actually, we have already done that

Tour guides had years of experience, and were at ease with travelers questions, weather iilnterruptions, etc.

Absolutely pleased with the Avalon experience.

There were adjustments to the itinerary along the way due to high water levels but the Cruise Director and Captain did a great job of adjusting. Avalon also compensated us for the issues even though they were not within their control.

As a past Viking traveler, with this being my first Avalon trip, I still favor Viking. Both river cruise experiences were comparable but there were some procedural differences that I feel were handled better with Viking. I would travel with either cruise line in the future based on price and/or itinerary.

This was my fifth river cruise with Avalon, and I’ve loved everyone of them. The ship is beautifully designed for travelers; the staff is efficient, enthusiastic, and accommodating; the local guides are knowledgeable; and the food is quite good. I definitely would embark on another cruise with Avalon.

We found Avalon Waterways to be an excellent experience. The rooms were good sized and well appointed. The food was outstanding and the staff went above our expectations to make the trip comfortable and enjoyable.

Did not know what to expect with a river cruise as we've always gone on large cruise ships but ended up loving it.

This was our second Avalon cruise and we recommend them to everyone!

This is our third river cruise with Avalon Waterways and they have done an outstanding job on every cruise. Will recommend them without hesitation.

Avalon Waterways goes the extra mile to ensure every passenger is satisfied.

The food was awesome, better than expected.

Avalon Passion had the intimate atmosphere of small ship cruising. By the end of the trip there was a good family atmosphere on the boat. The ship was in great condition, crew and staff were pleasant and attentive and the Tour Director was great. Local guides were all passionate about their destinations, and since we were in four different countries in a week, we got interesting, and sometime startling, perspectives on Balkan history. The weather was very hot, and this made some of the walking tours rather grueling, but the Tour director and guides did their best to adapt tours to the heat, and make sure there was plenty of water, rest and shade. The shore based last three days were fascinating but tiring. All in all, a great experience.

Was a fabulous experience. Avalon, the boat, the staff, the tours, the airfare. Perfect!
