  1. Day 1
    San José
Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer is included.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: The adventure begins tonight. Feel free to explore before your welcome meeting, but make sure you're back in time to meet the group. Check for the meeting time on the welcome note at the hotel. After introductions, your CEO will review the details of your tour. Please note that normal check-in times apply at our start hotels, but you can usually store your luggage for the day if you arrive early.
Accommodation: Hotel Radisson San Jose (or similar)
  2. Day 2
    San José/Tortuguero
Travel by land and motorized canoe to Tortuguero National Park. Located on the Caribbean coast, Tortuguero—translated as "land of the turtles"—is one of the world's most important nesting sites for the endangered green sea turtle. Settle into our secluded lodge, then enjoy a guided boat trip along Tortuguero's tropical waterways. Afterward, visit the Sea Turtle Conservancy, the world's oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting sea turtles. Founded in 1959, the organization was inspired by the work of pioneering conservationist and National Geographic Grantee Archie Carr. Later, enjoy time to relax at the lodge pool, take a stroll along the beach, or head out on a kayaking excursion.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Transport: Climb in and move swiftly through the water to the next stop.
Activity: Visit and meet one of the researchers at the Sea Turtle Conservacy program, a non-profit organization where we learn about the research and conservation initiatives that have been instrumental in saving the Caribbean green turtle from extinction. Learn about the four species of sea turtles found in Tortuguero and discuss the main activities at the station including track surveys, biometric data collection and tagging, satellite tracking, nest excavations, environmental education and outreach. We also discuss raising awareness and protection for sea turtles across the globe. The Conservancy was co-founded by Archie Carr, a National Geographic grantee, for his studies in green sea turtle ecology.
Accommodation: Turtle Beach Lodge (or similar)

    Meals:   Breakfast   Lunch   Dinner
  3. Day 3
    Tortuguero
This morning, we'll explore the wildlife-rich canals of Tortuguero National Park once more, seeking out howler, spider, and capuchin monkeys, sloths, and a variety of birds.
Activity: Hop on board, kick back, and prepare to witness a parade of tropical birds, reptiles, and mammals as we motor through the black water canals of the Tortuguero NP. Scan the trees for toucans, watch the shores for caimans, otters, iguanas and frogs, and look up to see monkeys sharing space with sloths. Bring your binoculars and bug spray. Be prepared for hot, humid, and possibly wet weather.
Activity: Take a guided walk along the trails surrounding the lodge to learn more about the flora and fauna of the jungle. Learn about the delicate ecosystem and get a close-up view of some of the frogs and insects that play an important part in nature's cycle.

En route, visit a G Adventures-supported coffee cooperative to gain insight into the process of coffee production, from bean to cup. After a typical lunch—accompanied by an aromatic cup of coffee—continue to La Fortuna. Check in to your hotel and unwind by the pool, taking in views of the surrounding jungle, the verdant hills, and the dark silhouette of the volcano.

Feel good about all this eating and drinking knowing that you are supporting a G Adventures for Good project that helps 200 farmers and their families.

    Meals:   Breakfast   Lunch
  5. Day 5
    La Fortuna
Spend the day exploring La Fortuna and its surrounding areas on your own. In 1968, the Arenal Volcano erupted after centuries of laying dormant, converting this quiet agricultural town into a hot spot for adventure travel. This evening, visit a local home to learn how to make tortillas. Chat with your welcoming hosts and dig into a traditional Costa Rican meal of black beans, plantains, and your own handmade tortillas.
Activity: Learn the art of tortilla making from Doña Mara in her family home. Grind the corn, mix the "masa" (dough) into balls, flatten into circles, and then cook them up on a wood-burning stove. Relax with a fresh tropical fruit juice, get to know the family, and hear about the history of tortillas. Afterwards, dig into a tasty "casado" - a typical Costa Rican dish including black beans and plantains - complete with your own hand-made tortillas.

If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the resplendent quetzal—a sacred bird in Maya and Aztec cultures. In your free time, embark on a zip-lining adventure, gliding high above the treetops and zooming through the misty foliage.
Activity: Pull on your poncho and boots. It's time to head into the cloud-covered forest, past over-sized ferns and exotic orchids. Harness your inner Tarzan and Jane as you imagine swinging from the giant vines. Walk along 2 to 3km (about 1.5 mi) of trails at a leisurely pace, watch for wildlife, and trek to the top of the observation tower. Be sure to stop and listen, too. Hear the haunting call of the bellbird and perhaps catch sight of the brilliant green and red resplendent quetzal. Feel good about protecting the forest and sustaining the quality of local schools through payment of your park fees.

  9. Day 9
    Monteverde

Hear from a researcher about some of the institute's conservation initiatives, including a successful reforestation project; then roll up your sleeves and head to the nursery to help plant trees and collect data for the project. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, opting to visit the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens to see dozens of local species, explore forest trails, or go zip-lining.
Free Time: Go wild! Choose from a variety of activities in Monteverde to explore and experience the natural beauty of this cloud forest.
Activity: The Monteverde Institute has served as the base for numerous National Geographic-funded explorers and researchers studying the famed canopy of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Enjoy a lecture by one of the researchers outlining the various projects National Geographic has sponsored including new discoveries, insect and bird studies, and the reforestation of tropical regions. After, play an active role in this project, visiting the National Geographic-sponsored research plot and getting your hands dirty by either planting trees to restore habitat, assisting in tree care in the nurseries, or collecting data to provide information that will aid the success of tropical reforestation programs.

  Ask A Question

Question: How many suitcases can I take with me on my trip?

Each person is allowed one "check-in," and one "carry-on." Remember to take all valuables with you as "carry-on", because electronic equipment, cameras, laptops, jewelry, business documents and money are not covered by the airlines' liability, so always carry them aboard with you.

Question: Is Airfare Included in the Price?

Airfare from your point of origin to and from the trip is not included in the land price.

The tour was virtually perfect in every way, and everyone on the tour felt that way. Our tour leader Marco Zamomra, was the best imaginable! He did so much in the background to make sure everything went smoothly, yet he was never stressed or impatient. He was a wonderful administrator and a talented naturalist guide. From the first meeting, he engendered a feeling of “family” among us 16 strangers. He encouraged us to help each other and to enjoy each other’s company. The sights we saw were wonderful. The guides Marco hired were superb and knew their stuff in their areas. The itinerary allowed for a great variety of choices in activities suited to various interests and physical abilities. Marco had a sense of humor and generosity beyond belief. One tour member fell and broke a tooth, and he took her to his personal dentist and stayed in the room to translate while the dentist worked. He always took extra steps like this, as his main goal was to help us in every way. He was adaptable. We were so lulcky to have had him. To my surprise, wildlilfe is harder to see in CR than I had expected, but Marco and the other guides and experts were so knowledgeable that we saw many animals. What was really nice is that all the guides carry spotting scopes to which they can attach iPhones for close-up pictures not otherwise obtainable! There were a couple of spots in Manuel Antonio that were unpleasantly crowded, but that seems to be unavoidable, unfortunately. The hotels were all nice and breakfasts were great. A couple of the hotels were laid out in strange ways that required long walks with baggage and no one to carry them for us. Be prepared for that. Travel as light as possible. Eating out when meals weren’t provided cost about $15, more than I had been told, but it was always good food. Unlike on some tours, we were never dumped at souvenir shops, etc., a good thing! I highly recommend this tour, whether you’re into bird-watching or white-water rafting! You have choices and can make this YOUR trip and still be a “family” with all on your tour. The buses used were modern and clean and comfortable. One thing I would have liked was that certain info, like packing list and detailed itinerary and money expectations be provided earlier. As it was, I didn’t get some of the info until very shortly before departure.

The 14 day tour of Cost Rica gave my wife and I a very good feel for the various regions, habitats and climates. The accommodations were very nice and our tour guide Adrian was a great guide, person and host for the trip. He went above and beyond.

I had a great experience from a previous tour from National Geographic and G Adventures's partnership, and due to that, I booked this tour: National Geographic - Explore Costa Rica. However, 2 weeks later, I was informed that due to COVID-19, it'd not be run by National Geographic. Just by G Adventures, and it'd be named Costa Rica Upgraded. The experience was still good with a hiccup along the way, but I still feel it'd have been an improvement if National Geographic was involved. Our guide, Vinicio, was amazing. One of the top 2 best guides I ever had. He took great care of us and all aspects of our tour. He showed up with positive energy everyday, and was good natured, patient and helpful. He also had a vast knowledge of wildlife and nature in Costa Rica. The hiccup we had was our accommodation in Manuel Antonio, which wasn't up to par. After many complaints from the group, G Adventures did an investigation, and compensated us. The email G Adventures sent to us shows that they care and value us. It instills trust.
