  1. Day 1
    Lisbon: Welcome to Portugal
Speckled with charming and picturesque villages, Portugal will enchant you as you move from coast to mountains. Dream of village-to-village hikes and delicious food as you head off into the countryside toward the Spanish border. Welcome to Lisbon, and to Portugal, where we invite you to savour the sights, sounds and flavours of the adventure before you.
Transport: You will be met at the airport and transferred to the hotel to start your adventure.
Activity: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.
Activity: Learn about the history and local cuisine in two of Lisbon's neighbourhoods. You'll see taverns, shops, and local restaurants.
Accommodation: Hotel Dos Reis Lisbon (or similar)

    Meals:   Dinner
  2. Day 2
    Lisbon: Cabo da Roca Hike
Sand coloured cliffs dive to meet the vibrant contrast of the mediterranean blue with statue-like stone stacks that jut out of the sea, while waves crash along their sides. These are your views along your breathtaking morning hike. But the spectacle doesn't end there. We head west of the castle capital to Sintra, where you can smell the flowers and explore the amazing garden of Palacio Monserrate. After a beautiful day, the night is yours to explore the city of Lisbon.
Activity: Altogether, there are more than 2500 plant species in the gardens. Particularly worth a mention inside the palace are the Music Room and the luxurious reception rooms, such as the Indian living-room, the dining-room and the library, all of which are to be found on the ground floor.
Activity: Photo stop where "a terra se acaba e o mar começa…" which means "Where the land ends and the sea begins". It's the westernmost point of continental Portugal, as well as of continental Europe. Enjoy a panoramic view over the Serra de Sintra. Historical records indicate that there was a fort on Cabo da Roca in the 17th century that played an important part in guarding the entrance to Lisbon's harbour, forming a defensive line along the coast, especially during the Peninsular Wars.
Activity: This route covers the cliffs on the coastal area, passing by spectacular viewpoints such as Pedra de Alvidrar and Buraco do Fojo, on the southern slope of Praia da Adraga. Starts at Cabo da Roca and continues along the coast to the beautiful Praia da Adraga, known for its stone arch and caves. The route to Adraga follows mainly footpaths and requires suitable footwear and some physical preparation, as the second and third kilometers are quite technical with steep climbs. Elevation Gain: 450 meters
Accommodation: Hotel Dos Reis Lisbon (or similar)

    Meals:   Breakfast   Lunch
  3. Day 3
    Medelim: Portugal's Countryside
Bid farewell to Lisbon as you head into the picturesque Portuguese countryside. Get your bearings in a small town before setting off on a pleasant hike that will take you on a winding trail near the Spanish border.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private with a lunch stop and breaks along the way.
Activity: This guided hike is moderately challenging and winds along a beautiful trail near the Spanish border. Keep an eye out for colonies of vultures for which the trail gets its name. Elevation Gain: 250 meters
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Accommodation: Casa Do Cedro - supplement for 3 Premium Rooms (or similar)

    Meals:   Breakfast   Lunch   Dinner
  4. Day 4
    Medelim: Historic Village Hikes
Travel back in time over 1000 years to an era of castles, legends and traditions. Deemed one of Portugal's 12 Historic Villages, Idanha-a-Velha will connect you to a time of conquerors as you traverse the paths through historic stone walls and castles. On the hike to Monsanto, hear the tales of this region's fascinating history under fig and olive trees. Just up the road, the natural pools and a small waterfall at Penha Garcia offer the perfect place to conclude today's adventure.
Activity: Nestled between the Pônsul River and three gentle hills, we find the modest Idanha-a-Velha, a town originally settled by the Romans. Beneath its humble urban fabric lie the ruins of a city with a rich history.
Activity: This fascinating trail will take you through the history of Portugal. The trail from Idahna-a-Vehla to Monsanto is part of the GR7 E12 route from Gibraltar to the Pyrenees Mountains. The entire 1,000km trail passes through Portugal, Spain, and France. The trail ascends at a gentle grade as it passes through varied terrain. Start your journey towards Monsanto, where along the way you will see orange, fig, lemon, olive, peach and plum trees. The foot path lined by stone walls near town promptly changes to a dirt path through hills of scrub that end at an asphalt road providing a view of the Monsanto castle in the distance. Elevation Gain: 460 meters
Activity: The natural pool is surrounded by a beautiful landscape, where a small waterfall stands out and offers beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding hills.
Accommodation: Casa Do Cedro - supplement for 3 Premium Rooms (or similar)

    Meals:   Breakfast   Lunch   Dinner
  5. Day 5
Manteigas: Hike to a Castle in the Sky
The enchanting Sortelha Castle stands on a crag at an altitude of 760 meters. It looms over the most mysterious of all the historic villages, where you will soon lose yourself in a maze of alleys and lanes as you hike up to the lofty castle. It is a place where time seems to have stood still. The wind whistles round the corners and hardly anyone passes by. This sentiment lingers when you arrive to the town of Belmonte after your hike in Sortelha.
Activity: Surmounted by a castle built on a formidable crag at an altitude of 760 metres, Sortelha still retains its medieval appearance through the architecture of its rural granite houses. This is the most mysterious of all the historic villages you encounter on your adventure.
Activity: Famous for historic villages, this hike takes place on a medieval road connecting Casteleiro and Sortelha, surrounded by ancient olive groves.
Accommodation: Casa das Penhas Douradas (or similar)

    Meals:   Breakfast   Lunch   Dinner
  6. Day 6
Amarante: Explore Serra da Estrela National Park
In Portugal's biggest National Park, rolling hills are interrupted by giant slabs of granite that protrude out of the ground. Pause to admire the beauty of this stark environment at the Chapel of Santiago before the hike leads you to the beautiful Vale do Rossim Lagoon.
Activity: Explore this beautiful valley nestled within the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. You'll be surrounded by lush green, rolling hills, and striking rock formations scattered across the landscape. Witness the two granite peaks, Serra da Estrela, the namesake of the National Park, and Fragões das Penhas Douradas, which hosts your OMG Stay at its peak. The hike will lead to the dazzling lagoon of Vale do Rossim.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Accommodation: Casa das Lérias (or similar)

    Meals:   Breakfast   Lunch
  7. Day 7
Amarante: Douro Valley Walk Along the Vineyards
A tapestry of vineyards unfolds as you traverse Douro wine country, Portugal's most esteemed wine region. With the perfect blend of nature and culture, crossing this picturesque countryside proves worthy of more than just wine tasting as you hike along a valley trail along the river. Soak in the incredible views as you sample some of the specialties of the land.
Activity: The Corgo walking trail is located in the heart of the Douro wine region. Walk along the terraced vineyards with unique views of the Corgo river. Elevation gain: 100 meters.
Activity: Enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh, local ingredients paired with some of the wines that are grown in the region. Soak in the views of the Douro Valley and the Corgo River below.
Activity: Discover Mateus through a premium guided tour of the Casa Museum, temporary exhibitions and Chapel, accompanied by an expert guide. At the end of the visit you will be offered a glass of Mateus Rosé or white wine from Lavradores de Feitoria.
Accommodation: Casa das Lérias (or similar)

    Meals:   Breakfast   Lunch
  8. Day 8
Amarante: Hike to Casal de Loivos
Mesmerizing mazes of vineyards scale the sides of the Pinhão hills. You will weave through historic village streets, beautiful buildings and up through paths draped with green grape vines. This hike allows for an endless panoramic riverscape and gorgeous views of the Douro River.

Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Accommodation: Casa das Lérias (or similar)

    Meals:   Breakfast
  9. Day 9
    Porto: Your OMG Day
Porto is yours to discover today with a choice of two activities. Explore the best of Portugal's second largest city on an e-bike tour through picturesque neighborhoods, along the coast to where the river meets the sea. Or choose to climb aboard a river cruise followed by a port wine tasting in the historic Vila de Nova Gaia area of the city.
Transport: Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
Activity: Option 1: Discover Porto's historic old town on a panoramic e-bike tour. Cycle through the neighborhoods of Ribeira and Miragaia, following the river down to where it meets the ocean. See some of the city's many bridges and look out to the typical "rabelo" boats that have been used for centuries on the Douro River. Option 2: Take a boat cruise along the Douro River on one of the typical "rabelo" boats. See the iconic bridges of the city as you glide underneath them and watch everyday life unfold along the river. Health and Safety Protocols for G Adventures Tours

Travel with Confidence

Your safety, as well as the safety of employees and partners, has always been G Adventures top priority, which is why new physical distancing and cleaning measures have been put in place on all of the tours. New Travel with Confidence policy features new health and safety procedures from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, without taking away from having the time of your life. The policy will evolve as time goes on and as G Adventures continues to monitor local public health recommendations, but what won't change is the commitment to keeping you safe as you explore big, beautiful world.

Before you join us

Global Connection Officers

GCOs (the people who answer when you call us) are available 24/7 to help with any questions you have prior to your trip, so you can feel confident and safe before leaving. No matter what time of day, they're there to respond to you — even at 3AM. They'll be up to date on local regulations and restrictions and can guide you through your travel process as smoothly as possible. And if you don't feel well before travelling, there's the Book with Confidence policy that helps you reschedule your trip for when you do, which they can help you with too (terms & conditions apply). If you book flights with us and there are any changes, rest assured that the team will support you by making new arrangements on your behalf.

Smaller groups

Groups have always been small. This offers security, access, camaraderie, and a connection with your destination you won't get by travelling on bus tours or on your own. The average group size is 12, ensuring travellers can engage with each other without being squeezed together like sardines — and that was before physical distancing became a reality. Plus, if you have 8 or more friends you'd like to adventure with, you can reserve the entire trip!

My own room

If you're joining one of the small group tours on your own, good on ya! If you are a solo traveller sharing a room with someone, G Adventures will do their best to ensure they will be your roommate for the entire journey to support distancing efforts. G Adventures has 'My Own Rooms' available as an extra option for tours (pending availability), and they'll be offering more of these at more affordable prices to make it even easier to have a bit more space.

When you arrive

Chief Experience Officers

CEOs are responsible for ensuring you have the time of your life while keeping you as safe as possible. Here's how they're ready to do that:

  • They're trained in First Aid, CPR, and other safety protocols
  • They're supported 24/7 by the field staff in offices around the world who are well-equipped to handle emergencies
  • They can help you find local clinics if you're feeling sick
  • They'll receive new training to ensure they are up to date on all health and safety policies during these evolving times
  • They have extensive local knowledge to proactively help you navigate wherever you're travelling
  • Their local knowledge allows for greater flexibility when it comes to knowing the best time to visit certain highlights to avoid crowds whenever possible and suggesting the restaurants with the strictest hygiene practices or those where you can reserve your own table or room in advance
  • They'll wear face masks when necessary based on local guidelines and recommendations

You & your fellow travellers

Travellers' safety and wellbeing is G Adventures biggest concern. If you're not feeling well before your departure, G Adventures has a Book with Confidence policy that provides you with flexibility and freedom to delay leaving until you're back to 100% healthy (terms & conditions apply). If you have a fever or any other symptoms on tour, you may be required to have a doctor clear you before rejoining us. All travellers are requested to bring face coverings, whether they're buffs, face masks or bandanas (extra style points encouraged). G Adventures makes every effort to have hand sanitizer available, but recommend bringing your own.

While on tour

Planes, trains, automobiles and more

Small private transport vehicles

  • Every surface in G Adventures well-kept fleet of private vehicles will get at least one daily deep cleaning
  • Each traveller will have a daily assigned seat
  • Hand-sanitizer will be required every time you board the vehicle
  • Facial coverings will be recommended while on-board
Boats
  • Every surface will get at least one daily deep cleaning
  • High-traffic areas will receive more frequent cleaning
  • Hand-sanitizer or hand washing will be required every time you board the boat, as well as before and after meals
  • To support physical distancing, meals may have assigned seating and there will be assigned slots for activities and rooming
  • Facial coverings will be recommended and welcomed on-board
  • Your crew is trained in health and safety measures (including food handling) and all cooking staff will follow up-to-date advice from health authorities
Local transportation
  • Use of local transportation will be limited wherever possible. Please reference the Trip Details for each individual tour for specifics
  • If local transportation is used, precautions will be followed in adherence to local health and safety regulations to keep travellers safe and sound.

Where you'll be staying safe

G Adventures has always carefully selected accommodation partners for high standards and local roots. Travelling in small groups means that the stay is in smaller hotels too, with fewer guests — which means less daily contact with others outside your group in public spaces. Now G Adventures is working with accommodation partners to optimize their health, safety and cleanliness procedures, as well as creating additional measures for physical distancing. Here are some of the things G Adventures is working on to help keep you safe:

  • Daily deep cleaning and disinfecting of all surface areas inside your room with extra cleaning on light switches, door handles, TV remotes, and thermostats
  • No hotel staff will enter your room after it has been cleaned
  • Increased frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of all public restrooms and all surfaces in public areas. This might include the closure of public spaces such as gyms, bars, restaurants, and meeting rooms for periods throughout the day
  • Wherever possible, groups will stay on the lower floors to limit elevator use
  • Hotels will implement social distancing protocols in line with local regulations
This is just the beginning of commitments to keeping you sleeping safe and sound. G Adventures will continue to evolve and roll-out these and additional policies as needed.

A good & safe place to eat

G Adventures has always carefully selected food service partners and worked closely with them to ensure they are meeting health, safety, and cleanliness standards with their facilities, staff training, and food preparation and delivery. Wherever possible, G Adventures will reserve separate tables or private rooms at the restaurants visited on the trip, opt for more "al fresco" opportunities when it is possible (gotta love that fresh air!), and ensure breakfasts can be "grab and go" boxes, while avoiding family style or self-serve buffets for meals. G Adventures wants you to feel comfortable and safe as you savour every last bite.

Activities

You've always had freedom and flexibility to do your own thing on tours with optional activities and experiences. Now, you'll still have those options with added measures to keep you healthy and safe. All equipment for activities on tour, including hiking poles, camping supplies, life jackets, snorkels, etc., will be cleaned thoroughly at least once a day and disinfected between use. When travellers are responsible for putting up their own tents on camping itineraries, you will be given the supplies required to disinfect your gear. G Adventures will also do their best to make activities and highlights stops happen during non-peak hours, so you can have fun and feel safe no matter what you're doing.

Before you leave

A healthy goodbye

If you're not feeling well at the end of your tour for any reason, let your CEO know and they can help get you access to medical care and support. Because we want you to head home after a life-changing experience feeling just as good (let's be honest, way better) than when you left.

Questions & Answers

Question: How many suitcases can I take with me on my trip?

Each person is allowed one "check-in," and one "carry-on." Remember to take all valuables with you as "carry-on", because electronic equipment, cameras, laptops, jewelry, business documents and money are not covered by the airlines' liability, so always carry them aboard with you.

Question: Is Airfare Included in the Price?

Airfare from your point of origin to and from the trip is not included in the land price.

G Adventures small group traveling was outstanding. We could get places that large coach trips could not. And we got to know each other so well. Everything was quicker and easier. Imagine a group of 8 versus 30! We will only travel small group from now on out.

G Adventures was amazing! Our CEO went above and beyond. We would absolutely travel on one of their tours again.

G-Adventures is very good. I highly recommend their trips.

I have booked with affordable tours before with other agents but Maya Keith is absolutely the best. She was patient in answering all our question especially as it related to travel in Europe when there is war in Ukraine

This was one of the best trips we have ever taken. Our guide was so polite, helpful and informative. The fact that there were fewer tourists made it all the better.

This was my 8th tour with this operator and I have a 9th scheduled. Obviously I am happy with this operator.

It was a great tour and are guides were very knowledgeable.

A Gadventures tour is a great affordable way to see the country and get the opportunity to meet and interact with the local people

It was a dream vacation.Thank you.

The G-Adventures travel guides were excellent

All 100% perfect, nothing to be done better

The G Adventures tour was fantastic.

Very satisfied with tour, enjoyed it very much.

I liked the variety of activities and the chance to opt out without undue pressure. I met some really fun people on this tour.

Everyone connected with the tour went above and beyond. The tour was more than I ever dreamt!
