Overview

Haiphong is the third most populous city in Vietnam. Haiphong serves as the major seaport for the northern region of the country. Haiphong has existed as a noteworthy port city for at least several centuries, and was one of Vietnam's chief trading centers. After World War II, when Vietnam attempted to regain its independence from France, Haiphong was the site of the first military action undertaken by the French, being bombed by the French navy. Later, in the Vietnam War, the city was subjected to heavy bombing by the United States due to its status as North Vietnam's only key port. After the war, the city was built up as a major industrial center.

Things to Do

You can visit the legendary Nghe Temple. This temple is located in the center of Haiphong, southwest of the Municipal Theater. In 1919, the sanctuary was built and in 1926, the worshipping house was built. This temple has a lot of history of Vietnam so pay close attention.

Take a trip to Du Hang pagoda. Du Hang pagoda has as its Vietnamese name Phuc Lam Tu. The pagoda is located in the Ho Nam ward, Le Chan precinct. This is an ancient architecture built since the Le dynasty (980-1009). King Tran Nhan Tong, the founder of the Vietnamese line of Truc Lam faction called this place home.

Don't forget to visit Lan Ha Bay. Lan Ha Bay is positioned in the Southeast of Cat Ba Island, looking out of Van sea mouth, linking with Ha Long Bay. Its area is managed by Cat Ba National Park.
