Bermuda Travel Guide

Bermuda Cruises Highlights

  • Royal Naval Dockyard: This is the principal port for large cruise ships and a hub of activity. Once a British naval base, the Dockyard is now a popular tourist spot loaded with history. Here, you can explore the National Museum of Bermuda or the artsy Clocktower Mall. For adventure seekers, nearby Snorkel Park Beach offers a range of water sports.
  • Hamilton: The island's capital and a common port for smaller cruise lines, Hamilton is vibrant and colorful, known for its pink-sand beaches. It's the perfect place for shopping, dining, and nightlife. Stroll Front Street for its array of shops and restaurants, and don't miss the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, a quick cab ride away.
  • St. George's: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this port is steeped in history. Smaller vessels often dock here, offering a step back in time with its colonial buildings and reenactments of historical events. Wander the cobbled streets, visit the World Heritage Centre, or relax at Tobacco Bay, known for excellent snorkeling.
  • Horseshoe Bay Beach: No visit to Bermuda is complete without stepping onto the pink sands of Horseshoe Bay Beach. The contrast of the rosy beach against the turquoise water is nothing short of breathtaking. It's perfect for a lazy day or a fun time snorkeling in the clear shallows.
  • The Unfinished Church: Located in St. George's, this gothic church was never completed after being damaged by a storm in the 19th century. Its hauntingly beautiful ruins tell a story of the island's past and provide a unique backdrop for stunning photos.
  • Crystal & Fantasy Caves: Explore the subterranean marvels of Bermuda by visiting these dramatic formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The Crystal Cave, with its pontoon walkway over incredibly clear water, offers an otherworldly experience.
  • Royal Naval Dockyard: Immerse yourself in Bermuda's maritime history at this strategic outpost for the British Navy. Now, it's a cultural hub with museums, crafts markets, and art galleries. Don't miss the interactive Dolphin Quest experience.
  • Gibbs Hill Lighthouse: For the best panoramic views of the island, make the climb up Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. This historic cast-iron lighthouse stands as one of the oldest of its kind, and the view from the top is worth every step.

Bermuda Cruises Travel Tips

  • The main form of transportation in Bermuda is walking or by motorbike. It's impossible to rent a car when you visit the island because the government banned car rentals.
  • The island of Bermuda is most well-known for its beaches, so make time to visit at least one beach during your trip. You truly won't regret it because each beach is like paradise on earth. Keep in mind that some beaches are hidden-gems while others are a lot more popular!
  • Bermuda can be quite expensive, and you can quickly rack up a costly bill while you're out at a restaurant. Make sure you pay close attention to the cost of things when you're out and about!
  • Don't drink the tap water in Bermuda because the water isn't super clean or safe. Instead, be sure to purchase water bottles while you're out to have something to drink during your trip.
  • If you go swimming, make sure to be on the lookout for jellyfish that can sting and other animals that might cause you harm in the water. It's not likely that you'll get stung, but it's good to keep your eyes open just in case.
  • Make sure you pack your swimsuit, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Bermuda sees a lot of sun and you'll want to protect yourself when you visit the beaches.
  • Bermuda is a blend of British and American cultures, and while English is widely spoken, tossing in more formal local lingo like "Good morning" or "Good afternoon" instead of a simple "Hi" can earn you warm smiles.
  • Safety isn't a major concern in Bermuda, but standard travel caution goes a long way. Stick to the lit paths during night strolls and monitor your belongings. Also, it's handy to have some Bermudian dollars, but U.S. currency is accepted almost everywhere.
  •  Bermuda's climate is sub-tropical, lovely, and sunny most of the year but a bit humid. Light, breathable attire is your best bet. Think cotton tops, shorts, sundresses, and a hat to dodge the sun's rays. However, evenings can be cooler, so a light sweater or wrap is wise. For those scenic explorations, comfortable walking shoes are a must.
  • Bermuda has a smart-casual dress code in many places, especially at dinner, so gents, pack some slacks and a polo, and ladies, a nice dress. Don't forget your swimwear for the gorgeous beaches and pools, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

  • Getting There

Setting sail on a Bermuda cruise is an adventure that begins with a journey through the stunning expanse of the North Atlantic. Located off the East Coast of the United States, Bermuda is a convenient yet exotic escape. Most cruises sail from major ports such as New York, Boston, or Miami, offering a scenic voyage to the island's shores.

Upon the oceanic approach, travelers are treated to the iconic sight of Bermuda's Royal Naval Dockyard, serving as the primary cruise port. The historical maritime fortress welcomes visitors with its impressive structure, signaling their arrival in a land of enchantment. The Dockyard's deep waters and spacious berths accommodate even the largest cruise ships, ensuring a seamless transition from sea to island bliss.

  • The Perfect Time for a Bermuda Cruise

When planning your Bermuda cruise, choosing the right time to set sail is essential for an optimal vacation experience. Bermuda's mild climate all year round makes cruising pleasant whenever you go, but there are certain months that offer the ideal conditions for those seeking warm, beach-friendly weather and fewer crowds.

March to April: Cruising to Bermuda in the late winter months brings cooler weather, with temperatures hovering around 60-70°F (15-21°C). This period is perfect for cruisers who prefer a more laid-back and less crowded experience. The cooler temperatures are ideal for exploring the island's beauty without the peak season hustle, making your cruise more relaxed and enjoyable.

May to October: This period marks Bermuda's summer, with temperatures ranging from a comfortable 75-85°F (24-29°C), ideal for cruising. These months are perfect for cruisers who love sunbathing, swimming, and participating in various outdoor activities. Summer cruising in Bermuda also coincides with the island's peak tourist season, so cruisers can expect more tourists but also a vibrant array of local events and festivities, adding to the cruise experience.

November to February: Cruising to Bermuda during these cooler months (65-75°F or 18-24°C) offers a quieter experience on the island. This time is great for cruisers looking to explore Bermuda without the crowds, although some tourist services may be limited during this period.

For cruisers seeking the best balance between weather and crowds, the shoulder months of May and October are ideal. Booking your cruise during these times ensures warm temperatures, slightly fewer tourists, and all tourist hotspots in full operational swing, making your Bermuda cruise a delightful and memorable experience.

Traditional Gombey dancers, with their intricate costumes and rhythmic drum beats, often perform at festivals, representing a blend of African, Indigenous, Caribbean, and British cultures — a must-see spectacle!
